Hi Guys, a happy and prosperous new year to you all.
I wonder if any of you SF users can give me a bit of advice. When I'm recording I often want to " drop - in", ie, listen to 10 seconds or so of the previous part of the audio I've laid down, so I can match tone and pace etc. and then carry on recording. Is there a way of setting this up in SF? I've played around with it but can't find a way of doing it, I'm sure there must be, but I'm damned if I can find it.
Thanks

Bob,
What I do is bring up the previously recorded audio, listen to the last 10 seconds or so, reading along with the script to be sure I'm in that pace and tone. As soon as playback is done, I click the New File button, hit record and begin recording. It's not completely seamless, but seems to work pretty well. _________________ Be well,

Hi Bob
Thanks for the reply. That's pretty much what I've been doing too. As you say, OK but not seamless. In the record dialog box there's a "Review Pre/Post Roll" option which I think might do the trick but I can't figure it out. Have you tried that?

Bob,
Never have. When I'm next recording in Sound Forge I'll take a look. _________________ Be well,

I use the pre/post roll to preview edits. When editing a file if you highlight the section you want to cut out and then hit CTRL K it will play the section right before the edit and the section right after so you can preview how it will sound. I usually set a 5 second pre/post roll time.
I've never used it for anything else - I don't know that you can punch to continue to record in SF. You CAN punch in for an insert of a specific length. |

I know that it is possible to do dropins using SF but haven't yet found the magic formula. Will consult with mah guru... |

Well, here's what I learned. You can not, in fact, do punchins/dropins with Sound Forge. Guru is using Vegas.
Although, in SF, if you highlight a section, and hit the record button (I always use Ctrl-R) it WILL over-record just that section, I believe. But Still, that's dangerous. Better to create a new empty file, and record the new takes in that, and then copy and paste the keeper into the original recording. That way, you can undo to your heart's content.
Anyway. He says Vegas is soooo much easier for recording and editing.
Pooh. |

For punching in an insert in SF there is a selection in the record menu that says Punch in - if you select that and highlight what you want to record over you can do that - it's not perfect - if it's a tight insert it's tough.
I had thought the original question was whether you can select a punch in point at the end of the recorded file and then preroll and continue to record at the end of the pre-roll -- I haven't found a way to do that in SF. I'd also love to know if it can be done.
Also, you can always undo in SF - AND if you set up your options to undo after save you can go back to a previous version even if you've save over it. |
