“Philip, I’m putting a presentation together and would like my client to use you in their TV advertising campaign. You’re part of the pitch, what can I say?”

Nice opener from Howard who is the Creative Director of a new Advertising Agency.

“Have you listened to my demos?”

“Yes. Love ‘em and I’m familiar with your work on a few other TV campaigns.”

“Will you tell the client about my work history and play them the demos?”

“Oh yes! That’s a given”

“How do I fit in with what you’re offering?”

“You know the delivery on your last VW ad? Well it’s that spirit and tone, your knack of sounding VERY serious and getting a laugh off every line. Our ads will get a – WHAT did he just say – reaction from viewers. Me and my co-director Debbie think you do that very well.”

“I loved doing it! So when you present a storyboard for your pitch you’ll explain the concept behind the VW ads?”

“God yeah! We’re pretty much up to speed with all that!”

“Anything else you need from me?”

“No, this is great. You’ve answered every question so I’ve got all the ammo I need. Thanks mate, I’ll let you know how it goes”

“Good luck with the pitch. I’ll keep my fingers and toes crossed for you.”

Think about it

So he was angling for you to do a free demo for his pitch?

He's not sure than an experienced voiceoverist can replicate the same style of read again and wants your assurance you can?

He's very new, very barmy, or very timid at doing this "pitch" thing?

I took it the other way. What Philip has is a tried and tested product. There are demos available that stand up for themselves as well as an extensive body of work that has effectively created a shop window to the world that says, "Hi, I'm Philip Banks... come and buy. Accept no substitute, there is only one Philip Banks... and he'll nail it for you."

It seems that this particular creative director got it, saw what PB brought to the table and decided to use it as his competitive advantage without any faffing around Smile

That is unless I completely missed the point.

Cheers
Peter

That works for me. Have another look at Howard's questions to me and see upon whom I relied for the answers.

PB, it looks more like you were the one asking the questions and guiding him to his choices. He answered his own questions with your direction but thought he was the one asking. Great salesmanship.

The reality is, he was just looking for an excuse to talk to a superstar. Moments after he hung up the phone he couldn't wait till someone asked, "Who were you talking too?"

and he could smile and say, "My good friend, Philip Banks"

I knew there was a hidden agenda! He's probably selling autographs in a booth on a Fairground RIGHT NOW!!! Well, where's my share of the take?

'Tis the burden of celebrity, Mr. Banks, that people far and wide want a piece of you for free.

Suckers. Your fee just became the absolute maximum their budget can withstand. There's no project without your voice.
