I just got my unworthy mitts on a RCA 77DX. But the fork mount has an unusual thread. Is there a standard adaptor for this? Or how do I get it onto a standard mic stand?

I'm also wondering about the history of the mic. I see RCA started putting their "new" logo on the 77's in the last ones circa 1967. This one still has the old logo. Does anybody know when they started using the new logo exactly?

The AEA website has parts for those. Not sure all of what they have but they are building the new RCA ribbon stuff, although it's not RCA it's AEA but it looks like RCA.

The connection at the bottom of the big RCA mics are 1/2" pip thread.

The adapter is available at AEA
http://www.ribbonmics.com/aea/products.html
Model #: AEA-AD1 ~5/8”-27F to 1/2”M Pipe Thread Adapter (RCA Style) $24.00
Part sheet:

Vintage adapters come up on ebay now and again, and go for about $40.

Post a picture of it. The 77 took on many variations; from the 77B to the 77DX Poly-Directional.

This site can break it down for you:

Thanks, I'' have a look, but I do seem to remember them having more 44 accessories than 77 (or maybe same adapter.)

I think so. It looks different from others I've seen, but were a few variations on the basic design.

Thanks! I was looking in the wrong place! Now that I know what it is, I may be able to get one machined locally. It doesn't look that tricky.

Has anyone dealt with the AEA guys before? I'm finding their service almost non-existent.

I mailed them a query and beyond the "we're looking into and we'll get back to you no later than tomorrow" reply, there has been no further feedback.

In the meantime I noticed the pipe thread is the same used for bathrooms, so took a pipe conector and glued a European mic stand thread adaptor in there (couldn't find a standard one that fits) and glued it in place. So, now I have a vintage ribbon mic with plumbing.

I've never had a problem with Wes and the folks over at AEA.
Though it is a small company and it is the holidays. If you have any problem let me know and I can run over to Pasadena and get you one.

That would be great! I don't want to put you out, but whenever you in the area, I'd appreciate it. I can paypal to you before you mail.
This would also sort out one of my queries! I had a problem with their only delivery method being UPS, which would cost almost $65 dollars to send to Taiwan. For an article that costs $24, I considered this very excessive. I just ordered 2 books (one a hardcover) from Amazon, 10X the size and weight of the converter and it didn't come close to that.

I noticed that the 77 was lying on its' side when the picture was taken.

You may know this but "Always store the 77 and any ribbon mic in the vertical position either head up or down just so long as the mic is vertical". Otherwise over time when stored horizontally the ribbon will sag and that is not a good thing.

I have the RCA 44

Thanks! I did not know that. Damn... Just as I thought my DIY work was over for this month, I'll have to modify mic shelves to accommodating the case standing vertical.

PM me your address.

I'll call AEA and see what's going on.

I won't be able to get over there until the week after next. I'll let you know what I find out.
