I know we've discussed this quite a bit, but I must royally stink at searching the forums b/c I couldn't find the threads.
I have a series of ten tutorials (with sub-sections in some of them) to do totaling around 6K - 8k words. They are for internal use with corporations... they are software tutorials. There could be possible ongoing work with this company. They said they usually pay $.15/word. It seems a little low to me. I'm thinking more $.20/word. What's the "going" rate? _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

I charge .30 per word for projects under 2000 words,
.25 for projects up to 4000 words,
.20 a word for projects up to 10,000 words...
And I've never had a project longer than that! _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

For 8K words I would ask for $0,20 and probably accept $0,15.
It's not unreasonable. _________________ www.clairedodin.com |

This is a good structure. Asking for 15-20 cents is fine.
Don't ask me about the 20k plus projects i've done...that's what Advil is for. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

.20 is good if you can get it but for that length I, too, would go for .15. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

Caryn,
I'm with most of the others here. I would ask for twenty to twenty-five cents a word, but would accept fifteen cents.

Yeah...it's a tad low, but reasonable.
Taking the high number: 8000 words x $0.15 = $1200
8000 words / 150 words per minute is about 54 finished minutes.
Will take about 2 hours to record & 4 hours to edit = 6 hours total
= $200 per hour.
Taking the high number: 8000 words x $0.20 = $1600
8000 words / 150 words per minute is about 54 finished minutes.
Will take about 2 hours to record & 4 hours to edit = 6 hours total
= $266 per hour.
...and so on.....
Of course if you edit or record faster, the per hour number will go up, but those are the averages I use when I quote.
Best of luck!

Yeah, .15 to .20 is a good range, unless you see a lot of words like antidisestablishmentarianism, or floccinaucinihilipilification, or Shakespeare's classic honorificabilitudinitatibus ... then I think more like .25 ... at least for those words.

Thank you ALL!!
Yes, it was Amy's price points that I was looking for when searching the threads. SO glad you chimed in, Amy... and all. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

I would just charge $1000 for the first word and all the remaining words are free. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Another great and extremely helpful thread. Thanks for all your replies.
I got contacted by a lady in The States a couple of days ago asking me to do a 14,000 word narration. I think the money was $1900 or £1250, from what I recall, but I turned it down and said that long narrations aren't my forte, so I think I should pass on this one. Shame, as she replied saying that she really liked my voice.
I know my limits! The most I've ever had to read was for a 15 minute documentary, so I think that to edit 14,000 words and take out all the "for f%cks sake Darren, get it together!!" would just be too much work! _________________ https://www.darrenaltman.com/
