Does anyone have experience with this genre of VO work?

I've been approached to do some of this. The company is relatively new and this is a new area for them. He sent me a script that they recently did and told me it was a 5 hour recording session.

My jaw dropped when I did a word count which came to 7043 words - a 5 hour recording session? I can't see it taking more than an hour and a half or at worst two hours.

Am I missing something here? Is there something about Descriptive Video that would take you over twice as long to record than normal for the word count? Before I give them a quote I want to make sure that I know what I'm getting into.

Thanks.

Hi!

There are probably a lot of visuals/ maybe interviews/testimonials so the vo is not continuous, which would explain the difference.
If you need to time it to the video, make sure they give you the time code, so you don't waste 5 hours watching the video to find out where the vo comes in.
Even with this, it's surprising that the video would be 5 hours though, I would ask them to clarify, it does sound like either they gave you only part of the script or they made a mistake when calculating the time.

I did a project like this once. The desciptive part that I added was only sprinkled here and there throughout. There was dialogue that the visually impaired could hear just fine, thankyouverymuch. I only was to add things like "Brenda runs past" "Janice is watches from behind the bookcase," "David is flipping through old photos." "The sun sets, street lights come up."

The only reason why I can think of that the session would take that long would be if they want you to record to picture. It's easier to do that because sometimes you have to squeeze the description in quickly before an actor starts talking again!

Thanks - I think I'll send a quote with a proviso because he was unable to answer my questions.
