Last night a 10pm UK time I did an ISDN with a studio in LA (Bell Ding or something like that). An affilate of a network subsidiary of a production company's contractor's distributor were in post for a programme called "Minutes from catastrophe at 30,000ft" or by the time it is sold to the UK "Gosh, that's slightly inconvenient". The Producer, Director and a tight team of completely useless buggers had booked the studio for several hours because of the challenge the session would present the Voiceoverist.

Due to an Air traffic problem a number of aircraft were going to run out of fuel, bump into one another, bump into someone who was running out of fuel or run into someone bumping the fuel out of them. The US Pilots were professionally hysterical, the Canadian Pilots checked to see if they had enough doughnuts on board because if they ran of them things were serious eh, the German Pilots got so excited they formed up for a low level bombing run and the British Pilots discussed Cricket to pass the time. My job was to reproduce the RT (radio telephony).

"Speedbird450 hold at 150" that type of thing.

Two hour session took, by my watch 8 minutes!

They're probably just used to working with L.A. talent.

Amy, you know what?
I hate to say it, but I think you're right.

Present company excepted, of course.

Philip,
Obviously, you didn't whine, complain, demand or self promote enough to fill up the time allotted.
Are you sure you're a professional voiceoverist?

Serious question... apart from the voiceoverist experience being brought to bear, was the aviatorist experience helpful in the process? Most people's experience of aviation RT is entirely second-hand, whereas...

... or is it all just acting? Wink

Probably helped because I didn't Voiceoverist the lines I just talked to Air Traffic as a Pilot would talk to Air Traffic. When they added the FX to my voice and dropped my lines into context with the real stuff it sounded like it belonged.

As long as none of the people you were working for suggested reducing your fee because it took up so little of your time.

I had that happen once (I think he was kidding) and responded by offering to screw up a few times so he'd get his money's worth on the studio time (I was only half kidding).

That did happen to me once. I couldn't attend but am told it was a lovely funeral and the Producer's family were very understanding.

My Voiceoverist experience proved quite unhelpful in a moment of crisis at 3000 feet. I was lost, on one of my first solo trips in command of a flying machine. My level of personal anxiety was at "really quite concerned" and rising rapidly in the general direction of Panic. Trouble was, the first Air Traffic unit I contacted to seek assistance thought I sounded so calm on the radio that I must have been a Flying Instructor messing about, so they told me to go away as they were too busy to help.

Sign of a true pro Voiceoverist = doesn't know what he/she is doing but sounds like he/she DOES.
