|
|
I know, I am old school with this. But I haven't gotten around to getting anything fancy in place for FTP. Especially since my webhost is here in my town and the speeds are pretty good these days.
Anywho, my question is this. I use a Mac and whenever loading audio files to my remote server through my webhost, I have turn off my firewall to connect. I have had to do this ever since I started using their service. Is there a better way? Is this something where I need to contact my webhosting company to ask them?
I use Dreamweaver to manage my files on my remote server. By using another more adept piece of software for moving files to my server, do you think I may be able to bypass having to shut off my firewall everytime?
Sorry for the dense questions. I really only know what I need to know to do what I need to do at this point. And it's worked to this point. Just trying to get a better way that is not going to have me shutting off my firewall all the time.
Thanks for any suggestions. _________________ Ben

If I understand you correctly, you are using Dreamweaver to manage your uploads directly and having to disable the firewall manually each time to allow it to upload. If that's the case, go to System Preferences, Security, and then to the Firewall tab. Unlock the panel if required. The "Set access for specific services and applications" option should be checked. You should see a list of programs there which are either allowed or blocked. If Dreamweaver is on the list as blocked, delete it (-) and then re-add (+) from your program list. The next time you fire up Dreamweaver it may ask if you want to allow access... confirm, and from then it should remember for next time... or at least until the next re-boot
If all you're doing is uploading your modified web pages, then there's no need to go for a specific FTP client if Dreamweaver does the job OK... I use CyberDuck for anything out of the ordinary, but usually a built in uploader does the job in the most straightforward manner.
Now, if you're talking about a hardware firewall in your router/modem, then things could be a little more complex than changing the OS settings....
Hope that helps
Cheers

That does help. Thanks so much, Bish.
I use Dreamweaver to load audio files for download by my clients. I will check out some other FTP programs. I think I remember Mary mentioning one. I just have not gotten around to doing it. _________________ Ben

The new Opera browser has a file sharing server built in called Unite that lets you share any files on your computer directly without needing to send to an FTP server first.
It really saves time because your client is downloading the file directly from your computer. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

George,
Have you or any of your clients used this with success? Any snags or issues? Just wondering. _________________ Ben

Ben,
I started using Dropbox several months ago and I haven't been tempted to go back to my old ways of creating a folder on my host for the client, etc. My dropbox folder resides on my desktop and I drag a file onto it an it uploads in the background. A little checkbox turns green when it's ready and then I right click on the file to get a link to send to the client.
Funny, but it sounds more complicated when I write it out. It's very easy. Check it out and actually if you use this link and end up using dropbox, we'll both get some additional space. I know some others here did this last time I posted it. You can take a tour on the site as well. Lots of handy things it allows you to do. |

I only just discovered it, so can't say... It's worked just fine in tests so far. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
