I'm not extremely familiar with western hawk voices but it sounds like a Red-tailed Hawk, also common in the East. Take a photo if you can!

Will do— this guy is very elusive. I did catch my first glimpse of him today while trying to get this recording. He looked VERY silvery, and like he had at least a 3' wingspan.
I may be crazy, he went zooming by so fast.

All the little birds get very quiet when he's out making noise.

Today was the first day I heard him make the "screeeee" sound, but he didn't do it for long.

It DOES sound like a Red-Tail.

We have one that roosts next door, and we love it! It is always exciting to see one flying low across the yard. Even more so during hatching season, when they bring in their prey to the nests.

Another upside is that while we live beside a natural wetland, we see very few snakes (rat and corn snakes with the occasional copperhead) around here anymore. Kinda sad for the Black snakes that would always take up residence along the periphery - out of the dogs reach - but I believe the hawk is far more proficient at rodent/snake management, anyway.

Every now and then, we will find a little fur or feather explosion in the grass. The boys keep hoping for the chance to actually see the capture one day.

If you say it's gray it could be a Harrier there are few in this area, but the voicing seems wrong.

There are Red Tailed Hawks, abound in this area. 'Seems somehow odd to see a majestic beast perched on on a lamp post while driving down the street.

Acoustics are counter-intuitive. If one thing is certain about acoustics, it is that if anything seems obvious it is probably wrong.

There's a lot of variation in red-tail plumage, so you could be seeing a light-phase one.
