I've never had a problem using Vox Studio for any phone projects. I record at 44,1 16-bit mono, then convert to 8k, 16-bit, mono for final format of
ACM Waveform
Microsoft ACM: CCITT u-Law
I've got a client saying this:
Quote: | The primary difference here being that the files you sent were 16-bit rather than 8-bit resolution (which should be something easily configured) and our system requires the .ulaw extension rather than the .wav extension.
This should be as simple as recording in the ACM / PCM Waveform format, using 8-bit resolution and saving the file with the .ulaw extension.
Then we would not need to worry about any degradation of quality during a conversion process. |
So I can handle the resolution change from 16-bit to 8-bit in Vox Studio, I think (anyone know how?). An interesting thing about the final, converted file in Vox Studio is that its properties show 8-bits Mu-law, but properties of same file in AA show 16-bit.
Bigger rub is this: there is no mu-law or u-law file name extension capability in AA or Vox Studio. It's a file type.
As a standard, I record in a Windows Wave ACM/PCM format so I don't think that's an issue. Is a .vox extension also readable for something that "needs" a .ulaw extension? It makes no sense to me.

m/ulaw extensions are of the RAW format G.711 used for telephony variety. I will get into the extension renaming thing later, but first, AA defaults to a 16 bit file in the Edit screen (or 32 bit floating/24 bit in the multitrack view) as designated by the program.
When saving the file in Adobe Audition and the designated format (in this case "m/ulaw") it will actually be saved properly at the correct bit rate.
To save your files as .ulaw (this is a four digit extension used with Mac's) you will need to rename the files as you Save; i.e.: "DianesVOX353.ulaw". The file will be saved as .ulaw not as .vox or .wav. Do not Save then try to rename; simply add the .ulaw extension as you name the file
On a similar note; I have a client I cannot send .mp3's or even .zip files as their firewall/security simply drops them. To send the files via the internet I record as usual, then using the .mp3 codec in AA, I save the file as "FranksVoice.doc". The file shows in my Folder as a Word document and the firewall/security of my clients servers allows it pass through the flood gates.
Side note: As my client downloads the file he does a "Save As" then renames the extension "FranksVoice.mp3". All is well after that and it will play in any program or player capable of reproducing the .mp3 file.
Another friendly help/hint from the folks at "IKnowNothingProductions".

Hi
This is what I would do. You go to Batch Conversion - either press the Batch Conversion button if it's there, or go to the Convert menu at the top and choose Batch conversion - import the files you need converting and then choose the following settings for the new files:
Sound family: Windows Wav
Sound Type: Mu-law
Sampling Frequency: 8000Hz
If you've not converted before you need to set all the other things up too - it won't overwrite existing files so you many need to set up another folder for the converted ones.
Is that any use?

laura, that is completely and totally helpful. and i knew that. i couldn't open the files so i wasn't sure THEY were useful.
frank, thanks for that clarification. the whole 8-bit/16-bit thing had me scratching my head.
semetimes, when problems arise and you know the answer, it seems the answer, um, ain't good enough for the client. then that leads me--maybe you?--to rethink everything and suddenly become lost in the abyss. honestly. it was plain and simple. but i'm still awaiting reply from the client's engineers. hoo boy. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be.
