After all the discussions about rates on here, check out this email I received today. Needless to say, I... er.... politely refused!!

Hi Darren,

Hope you are well.

Please advise your availability for recording an elearning project, we can pay USD 100 for a finished audio containing 7500 words.

Thanks

This was copied/pasted. The figures have not been changed to protect the innocent!! Gasp

That's not a bad offer, $7500 for 100 words.
Oh wait a minute, I think my dyslexia is coming back!

It's your loss. After you finished that one, I'm sure they would have had sent you lots more just like them! Just think of all the work you're missing out on!

If I had the time, I've done this before, I would give the person making the enquiry a breakdown of the project in terms of time and technology and then ask how they arrived at a fee of $100.

Studio hire 2 hours = $300
2 hours VO time = $700
Editing 4 hours = $250
Audio delivery = $50 (nominal amount)
TOTAL $1300

For a professional production the above figures are at the lower end so how did the client arrive at $100. They could use their own facilities and therefore not have to hand over money for studio, editing and audio delivery which leaves them with only having to pay the VO fee. Assuming the job can be done in 17 minutes and the VO does not (A) have a minimum session fee and (b) does not have to travel too far it is possible for $100, possible but not probable.

Darren, feel free to copy the above and send it to the company.

Phillip,

thanks as ever for your response mate. I replied yesterday with the following:

Hi ***,

thanks for getting in touch. Unfortunately, I can't help you with your project as $100 for 7500 words is nowhere near in line with workable voiceover rates. To give you an idea of my rates, I charge $250 for the first 5 minutes of finished audio or 620 words.

Sorry I can't help you.

Regards,

Darren

...I haven't heard back!!

Darren, this client clearly confused you for the voice talent whose demo consisted of "Do you want fries with that?"

Darren, you forgot to add:
"P.S. Please send me $3000 worth of your product for $100 and I'll reconsider."
