I'm sure many here have seen it, but it will get the weekend off to a great start whether you have or haven't. 'The Carol Burnett Show' (CBS, 1967-1978) was the last of the television variety show genre, and taped with a (very) live studio audience. Featuring great writers and a great cast, there was never a dull moment.
This clip features Tim Conway and the late Harvey Korman. Harvey was an excellent comedic actor in his own right. And, while Tim is funny enough reading his lines, he is also a master of ad-lib and physical comedy. During rehearsal, Tim would generally read his lines as they were written. But as the rest of the cast learned, once taping began, all bets were off. Tim essentially did the sketches his way, and no one knew where he was going to go with his character. Much of the fun in watching this show was seeing the rest of the cast try their best to keep from laughing as Tim did his thing.
In this sketch, Tim plays a clumsy new dentist, and Harvey is his patient. Tim is attempting to give Harvey a shot of Novocaine and, as this clip opens, Tim gives Harvey the hypodermic syringe to hold while Tim begins reading the procedure step-by-step from a book, aloud. Harvey has no lines. But this isn't to say that Harvey won't make you laugh.
A well-spent three minutes. Happy Friday! _________________ Mike
