This month is Norman Corwin's 100 Birthday.

For those of you in VO who don't know of Norman Corwin, you should.
Norman Corwin is one of radios greatest writers, screenwriter, producer,
essayist, poet and a professor of journalism and writing at USC. His earliest and
biggest success was in the writing and directing of radio drama during the
1930s and 1940's.

LA's KCET brings us "The Plot to Overthrow Chistmas", written by Norman
Corwin. Originally broadcast on radio on December 25, 1938, and redone as a
television reading of the radio play in 1969, it is once again brought to the
screen by KCET in honor of Norman Corwin's 100th birthday. Before and
after this broadcast, KCET anchor Val Zavala interviews Corwin, who
comments on the radio broadcast and his career during his long life. The
radio classic was written, produced and directed by Corwin in 1938 and again
in 1969, so the stamp of his imagination and creativity was on every word.

The program was brought back to life in 1969 on KCET's weekly series
"Homewood", hosted by Charles Champlin. The camera follows Corwin
through each of his steps in producing and staging his famous radio play.
Thus we see Corwin assemble a cast including John McIntire, Jeanette
Nolan, Ed Platt, Karl Swenson, Alan Reed Sr (Fred Flintstone), Byron Kane,
Joan Tompkins and Parley Baer and others . We get a rare behind the
curtain look at the table read, sound effects and concluding with full
production itself, with Corwin in the booth "conducting" his play with all the
verve and sweep of Mehta conducting a symphony.
