I just compared the sound of some pres and wondered what your thoughts might be.

This comparison is highly flawed, because
1. I am not a voiceover artist.
2. There is an obvious reason for number 1!
3. There are some glitches...(Methinks it has to do with my newly arranged wordclock setup, but right now, I was more interested in playing with toys than troubleshooting. I just fixed a similar sounding glitch which needed a firmware update and SP3 firewire hotfix)

All files were recorded through a KSM44 - pre - Saffire LE
There are 5 files here

I'll post the answers in a bit.

OK, OK!! Seems no one wants to play. I suppose it wasn't a particularly fair comparison.

F4 SSL Alpha Channel
G3 SSL Alpha Channel (with 3/4 Variable Harmonic Distortion)
C9 DBX 386 (close to no tube)
M7 Presonus Studio Channel
L6 Focusrite Saffire LE onboard pres

From a price perspective:
Do you rate the SSL being worth double the price of the DBX?

It's interesting that you prefer the Focusrite pres to the Presonus as they are roughly the same price. Considering one is a channel strip and other a "all-in-one" interface. I think these are the same as the Platinum series, but not too sure.

Sound wise, what do you think of the VHD on the SSL. It seems REALLY subtle.

Gah...I hate everything Presonus does, it's official.

The SSL is worth the money.

Yeah, that one (ADL 600) sounds good, I love that it has variable impedance, and it should sound good for $2.2K - but it is two channel. Hmmm...that would be a nice addition for me for my keyboards and vocals. Wink Note that it was an outsider who designed it for them, tho'.

One thing that's crazy about it...it weighs 28 lbs. I'd need to get a new desk. I don't do the rack thing, trying to get away from my audio engineering monkey past.

Ha..I didn't know that. Was it anybody "famous"?

I am the complete opposite. I hate having things on my desk that don't HAVE to be there. I have specifically avoided a few pres purely on that...Not very smart, but my horizontal real estate is minimal.
