My beloved Sony MDR-V300s are starting to break on the headband, so I'm in the market for a new pair of cans. I do all of my editing in headphones, so I need good accurate sound. I also think I'd like closed ear to block out extraneous noise.

Any recommendations for under $100 cans? I'm leaning toward the old standby 7506's, but will entertain others.

I've had good luck with Sony MDR 7506. Had 'em for several years and no complaints. B&H Photo-Video-Audio has them listed at $89.95. Most other places sell them for $99.00

Sennheiser HD280. They're not comfy at first and I don't recommend them for large noggins. However, they isolate like just about no other. No bleed to the mic even when loud, and they cut outside ambience down something crazy like 8,345,000.17 db. Surprisingly this makes them easier and more natural to track with - you're getting your voice straight up, no chaser. They're also much more detailed and accurate than the hyped highs and lows of the 7506. I've heard things from on the 280s that I've listened to all my life that I couldn't hear with the 7506. I also wanted to go remix my demos being able to really hear what was amiss on the 280s. Now they translate better to different monitors.

For me, comfort is on par with sound fidelity because I do most of my editing thru 'phones, too.

Sony MDR V600 is what I have right now.

from SonyStyle.com— $99.

I'm with Lance... the Sennheiser HD280s are hands-down the best headphones I've used. They're nice and flat/accurate for checking mixes on too.

I'd definitely go for the Sony 600s (I like those) over the 7506 for VO - less bleed and comfortable.

I love the AKG240s old and new - the most comfy for my noggin but I might as well strap two little speakers to my ears in terms of bleed.

Love the Beyer 770s too, but that's a bit pricier.

I've listened to the new Shure headphones at the Banjomart/Guitarget and my first impression is that I like those better than the 7506 - sounds more like the HD280 and better isolation than the 7506. Pretty comfortable too.

Again HD280/7506...the HD280 need a day or two to break in for comfort and then they're great, plus the pads don't get all sweaty like the 7506 do.

Just ordered some the Sennheisers. Got a good deal on them for $80 shipped. Thanks for the suggestions, all!
