have been using a slight lull in paying work to finally (FINALLY) make good on promises to upgrade my website, and particularly replacing those test patterns with some actual video samples.
during construction, i read everything i could find about putting together an actor's demo, went to dozens of sites and saw what others have done.
my web genius was in wonderment over the videos i gave him to work with. not because they were so good...but because they were so long.
he asked me a question that stopped me dead cold, and i have to admit i still have no answer.
"if these producers claim they can tell whether you've got any talent by listening to less than :10 of your voice demos...and your voice demos cannot be longer than a minute...why is it that an on-camera demo should be anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes in order for the same viewer to be able to tell whether you can 'create and sustain' a performance?"
same talent...same type of work. how is it we're judged within seconds of our first vocal utterance, yet the "visual arts" require more consideration?
i pondered the point on my "clogged blog", but since this board has better readership, i'll repeat the musing here.
...would really be interested in the reaction of other professionals. _________________ rowell gormon

Because in an audio demo, they can't stare at your boobs.
But seriously, there's more information to take in on a video reel, so it takes longer to make an assessment and a choice. Just one thing on a audio demo. _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

I'd have to second what Amy said.
Not about the boobs although, sure, yeah, sure, there's the boobage factor to consider in video, but if it's a guy maybe not so much. Or maybe you have to allow that some clients are into man boobs.
I dunno.
But, I digress. In a video situation you end up watching for maybe a minute, especially if the scene is developing into something -- you just naturally want to watch til there's a resolution.
The other day I had occasion to go through a bunch of VO web pages (gleaned from HERE, by the way), and I found that it is really true that I get an impression of a voice for a given job in about 10 secs, sometimes less. But, give me that same person on video and I just naturally watch them longer. Must be some primate thing we have to try and connect with a face. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |
