It's been a year since Billy Mays went to that great infomercial in the sky and yet, there are some advertisers who are still using his spots. I suppose that's OK, although I find it a little bit creepy.
Somewhat better is the way his old partner Anthony Sullivan has redone a few of Billy's spots and invokes his memory in one or two.
But there's one advertiser -- the Awesome Auger -- that does something I find completely tasteless. They use Billy's old spot right up until the part where they've added some new crap to the offer, at which point a different huckster, Joe Fowler, chimes in with "That's not all, Billy ..." Hey Joe, Billy's dead. Why are you talking to him? That just weirds me out. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Reminds me of when Jim Varney (the "hey Vern" guy) died and the local automall kept using him on their billboards. I read the family actually liked it because they thought it was a nice tribute to his memory (plus they still got paid), but it still seemed a bit off to me. _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker

The lesson of Anthony Sullivan is - never worry about the consistency of your accent, just the consistency of your attitude. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Scott,
I'm so glad I had my speakers muted when I watched that. Can I have those 7 years back from my life, now? _________________ Be well,

He's just trying to kill-off any would-be competition, Bob. I'm glad you survived.

Around here there was a tire store that used Frank Fontaine (as Crazy Guggenheim) as their spokesman and continued to do so well after he died.
For a while I was the regular voice on the Hartford Courant's daily topical ads while, at the same time, a competing newspaper, the Journal-Inquirer, had, as their spokesman, Orson Welles. Needless to say, Mr. Welles commanded a significantly greater stipend than yours truly, no doubt paid in advance. For that reason, after the great man's passing, the J-I's commercials were re-done to include a brief VO at the beginning of each spot that said, "Ladies and gentlemen, the late Orson Welles for the Journal Inquirer." _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
