I’m getting in the pool, again.
I had no idea how the voice over industry had grown since I left in late 80’s. I was a production director for two stations then, at the time when voice work was limited to TV and radio. Writing copy and producing commercials was a hoot, one of the most crazy but enjoyable periods of my life.
After taking a look at the direction terrestrial radio was heading, I got out and moved on to tech were I spent over 15 years testing software. A good chunk of that time was at Microsoft banging on code for the Macintosh and Windows operating systems. It was an interesting job, one that I fell into by accident. I was a round peg that fit into a square hole, and not very well at that. Testing software is not overly creative but the pay was satisfying.
I was swept away from Microsoft and became an Amazonian. While at Amazon.com I wrote copy, played with web analytics, created e-mail campaigns, hobnobbed with vendors and manufactures. I got in the pool again and took on two voice over projects. The first was multiple episodes of AmazonWire, a podcast that featured interviews with authors, musicians and celebrities. After that, I voiced a number of book descriptions for the website WindowShop.com. Both of these were freebies and I found myself wanting to do more and more voice over work and less and less of what I was hired to do. Not a good thing. I ended up totally bailing on voice over work in favor of focusing on what I was paid to do. I got out of the pool. Sad.
OK, this is were it gets better. I left Amazon and took some badly needed time off to get my soul aligned with my brain so that I could recognize and understand my passions. The VO water looked temping and that’s when I realized what my number one passion with a bullet was.
So, I’m in the pool again and I just wanted to say, hey. Based on what I see on the BB, there are a number of talented swimmers that I hope to get to know better. Right now, I’m on shallow end but gravitating to deeper waters. Thanks for giving me a place to swim.
Ciao!

Hi JC!
Weeeelllll, Time to brew up a big ol' pot o' java, then....hmmmm.....the last time I saw the coffee pot it was somewhere in DB's studio being used as a watercress vase.
Just wander around, get to know the place & let us know when the coffee's ready! _________________ Liz de Nesnera O.A.V. ~ Livin' The VO Dream!

The path you've taken here is certainly an interesting one. I'm guessing it will be quite useful on the new leg of your journey. Welcome aboard.

Welcome!
I have to admit, I like the pool too. I have the school job to pay bills and have health insurance and all that, but when I get to jump into the studio and create, that's when I'm really happy.
I voiced some character actors on "spec" last night, and who knows what will come of it, but it was great to enter the world and wear the cape of a hero.
I'm still in the shallow end of the pool for now, I'm learning from these great people here and someday I'll take the dive off the platform. Each day, I get closer.
Now I'll go put the kettle on and make a spot of coffee. _________________ Company, villainous company, hath been the spoil of me...

J.C. ... Welcome to the VO-BB pool.
I haven't attained dolphin status yet, but I check the PH daily... arrange the poolside chairs... and occasionally dive into the shallow end for small change. _________________ "Bailey"
