Yes a newbie here. I've got software like AA3 and Sony Sound Forge Studio 9 but my recording equipment is strictly for amateur music recording and most of THAT is done on a DAW with virtual instruments and a keyboard. Not much vocal stuff so all I have is an AUDIX i5 mic and a Line 6 UX 1 breakout box. It works for what I want but I am NO EXPERT when it comes to professional sound. If I'm going to pursue voice over from a home studio do I need to understand all the functions of an engineer and all the technical aspects of sound? What I've read here is very intense. Soundproofing I understand. The rest blows my mind and I wonder if I need an advanced degree in sound or not? Gasp

Do you need to be an expert in Audio Engineering? No.

Do you need to be proficient at your craft? Absolutely!

Invest your time in becoming as good a voiceover artist as you can be. Practice, record on whatever you have, listen back to what you record. Listen to other v/o's for style and delivery. Find YOUR voice and YOUR sweet spot. Continue practicing... Get honest feedback from industry pro's, not your family or friends because they have to love you and quite frankly we don't have the same obligation.

Once you're comfortable that this thing called the voice over business is really for you, possibly consider some coaching from a reputable coach (some will disagree on coaching and that's fine, it's your decision).

After all of that, and only after all of that... consider investing in some professional audio equipment and learn how to use it properly. You have access to a great resource of information right here, but be sure to do your own homework and read through the archives... if it were in book form, it would be worth a mint!

As for proficiency with recording, it's pretty easy to learn the basics of what you'll need to produce recordings that can then be delivered to the professionals who can manipulate, process and produce a finished product.

It's not easy, sometimes its not even fun and on occassion it can kick you around pretty hard... if you concern yourself with becoming an expert at audio engineering, an industry that requires extreme proficiency for success, will likely chew you up and spit you out.

Some may disagree and I can only speak from my own experiences and mistakes. If when I first started in v/o I had focussed the time I spent playing with gear, on instead pracicing and honing my craft, things may very well have gone differently and more smoothly for me on my path to today; I seem to have taken a bit of a zig zag route, however I am now happy with where that path has ultimately lead me.

Good luck, you're amongst good company.

Azkope,

Believe me I'm by no means an engineer but I've learned the basics of what I need to audition and send a file thanks to some people on this board who have held my virtual hand and guided me from click to click. On most of the jobs I've gotten the producer will say just send the file don't do any processing. The Real engineer will do that.

So relax and follow the expert advice that's been given you here. Wink

Just ran across this site... I'm a newbie also who has entertained the idea of VO's for a few years. I was just recently re-inspired to consider VO's for multiple reasons (2 be named later). Finding n a forum with members like Todd and Brian is very enlightening. "I have a lot to Re-Learn and I have a lot of respect for those willing to learn me."

Donald,

Welcome and while no one here has all the answers, some of us have a few. We share with one another what we know and all grow together. It's really quite beautiful. (Oh, and there's a certain amount of horsing around and hijinks, too.)
