Hi, This is a gorgeous mic, used only once for a 2 min demo, so it is literally exactly as brand new. It's a wonderful mic, just doesn't suit my use (personal preference) so it's a waste me keeping an awesome mic like this and not using it. Everything is here, exactly as brand new, the only thing that's missing is the outer cardboard sleeve which I threw away, so it comes in the metal flight case and includes the Mic (black with gold grille), Power supply unit, foam windscreen, shock mount with spare elastic springs, connection cable (between Mic and Power supply) plus the manual and other papers. As mentioned it's been used for one session and then carefully put back in the original packing, flight case minus the outer cardboard sleeve. I am located in Orlando Florida so if you are interested let me know where you are and I can find out a price for shipping. The price of this new is $299, I am happy to accept $199 so if you are thinking of buying one here's a chance to save yourself $100 and get one that's the same as a brand new one, you can even have the original receipt so it should be covered by the warranty as well. This is an awesome tube mic, amazing quality and reviews compare the performance for mics that cost 10x more than this. Thanks!

Here I am replying to my own post! I have decided to keep it and upgrade the tube, I have heard this is the way to go with this mic and you get a far better sound with a higher quality tube . . . .

Absolutely amazing difference, I fitted a Matsushita ECC82 12AU7 purchased from 'Tubemonger' for $30 - very easy to swap, took just a few minutes and I now have a totally different sounding Mic - So much better! This now sounds serious Neumann type quality (I owned a U47 prior to this for 20+ years before I sold it). I would highly recommend doing this for anyone who is looking for a very high quality Mic that sounds like it cost $1000+ at a budget price. Buy an MXL V69 and the above mentioned tube and swap it over yourself. I arrived at this tube after reading through a forum page dedicated to this issue, different tubes give different sound and the problem I had with the original factory tube is that it seemed over sensitive to everything except my voice, it was picking up the slightest room noise, clothing movement ect and my voice sounded thin and tinny. This is now much better, good proximity effect, quiet background and good vocal sound with deep but not boomy or muggy bass, sweet high and good quality mids that are clear but not too sharp. This turned a mistake purchase into something really amazing.

yup - literally any budget tube mic will benefit more or less from a tube swap.

Take the Rode NTK, the predecessor of the Rode K2. One of the most loved or hated budget tube mics of the previous decade (depending on who you ask).
They were shipped from factory with at least three different tubes; either a Sovtek, an Electro-Harmonix or a crappy Chinese tube. Mine came with the latter. And it was awful.
I found an Electro-Harmonix tube at about 25 or 30 bucks. Immediately everything NTK-haters bashed it for was gone: the aggresive hyped top and the harsh sound.
Recently I tried something new, I swapped the tube again, this time to a $100 NOS Telefunken tube. Again the mic completely changed it's character; the top became clearer and the low end tighter. From being an overly top-end hyped mic, it's actually now a pretty dark sounding mic. I even have to lo-cut it - something the designers at Rode probably never imagined would happen.

Of course nothing is black and white when experimenting with tube swaps. A friend of mine have the K2 and bought the exact same Telefunken tube for his. The change was nowhere near as dramatic as with the NTK, probably because the K2 is a better mic to begin with.

I've also heard the K2 did not improve as much as the NTK does with a tube swap. I always loved my NTK, but when I upgraded to an Amperex NOS tube, it blew me away.

Tom,
the word on Gearslutz is, that there's never been a tube mic that benefits more from a tube swap than the NTK. I wouldn't know, but it might just be true. A very exciting mic for tube experiments, that's for sure.

When I was trying on tubes for my NTK I tried a Mullard NOS and an Amperex NOS before settling on a Telefunken NOS... all 3 were marked improvements over the original tube but the Telefunken sounded best for me.

Chris,
you can really "tailor" the sound of the NTK (to a certain extend, of course) by experimenting with different tubes.
How's your experience with the Teletubby NOS in yours, do you find it to be a dark mic, too? I was quite surprised with the result on mine, not really what I had expected! The top is definitely much clearer and detailed now, but I find the low end very dominant. That suits my voice quite well since I don't have the deepest voice in the world, but even I have to add lo-cut!

I have a pretty mid-rangey voice so the Telefunken had a fuller-but-not-overbearing sound to it, didn't sound what I'd call "dark" with my voice. You know, I've been using my 416 exclusively since moving to a new house last year (I had better noise-control issues with it than I did with the NTK at the old place), but I've got a better room here and this thread just reminded me I really do need to set up the NTK and see how it sounds here.
