one of these days real soon - i'm going to add a cloud above my immediate recording area ... would there be any acoustic harm in adding a couple of recessed lights to the cloud? it's a bit dim in here and i need some auxiliary lighting anyway.

stay away from the coil lights. They are inexpensive and save energy, but they create a buzz in the b/g from some reason. Other than that you should be good to go. Will be nice to see the copy right? haha

It should not be a problem. You just need to plan it out and use proper electrical boxes for all connections, and that the fabric is fire proof.

Track lighting is the easiest and the most versatile. Can lighting is another option, but unless you really know what you're doing it can be more trouble than it's worth and it can get hot.

Cashman Booth with track lighting on ceiling (the entire ceiling is fully treated from wall to wall.)


There are LED options as well as fiber optic lighting, but both can be expensive.

yeah - my plan is to use the "insulation safe - new install" can lighting (they're double lined) - run the 12/2 into a plastic box and a 3-prong male plug out so it's more modular then power it up with a heavy extension cord. i'm in a basement with concrete floors & solid ceiling so i don't want the hassle of hard-wiring everything.

Like I said you better think this thing through when using can lighting.

First at every point where a can is going to be placed, you'll need a plywood backer- 1) For the structure to hold the can. 2) To attach the fabric.

So if you end up with more reflective area than absorption, you'll be defeating the purpose.

Also beware the cans structure will actually amplify the 60 cycle ring of the filament and get very noisy.

If you're using an extension cord be sure you are plugging into a GFI outlet.

i'm good to go as far as construction & electricity ... that part i can handle - your comment about reflection (i assume you mean audio reflection & not reflection off the copy stand into my eyes) is what i was worried about. i'm looking (i think) at about a 5' square cloud with two - or MAYBE - three of (something similar to) these:

Yes, audio reflection. The very thing the cloud is there to eliminate.

Those retrofit cans need a sturdy base to mount to. So, I'm just sayin'.

There are some really nice retrofit cans out there with smaller profiles.

Before you haul off and do this, how big is the booth area and how high is the ceiling? There might be better solution then a single cloud. A picture of the ceiling will help too.
