How to Write a Script for a Voice-over (in eHow style):

Writing your own scripts can be simple and easy when you're creating something creative. We know that some clients prefer to hire big-time scriptwriters and that they have whole teams of special experts to edit the scripts. But, writing your own scripts need not be daunting. Some basic tools, software, and know-how will get you on the path to creating truly engaging scripts for your VO work in record time.

Instructions.

1. First, make sure that you can speak or read in some language. For example, if you are an English speaker, then writing in English is a natural choice.

2. Look around on your computer for a program that will help you write. On PCs, this would be Wordpad, or Word, both available from Adobe Software. On a Mac, look around for any programs from Microsoft, which makes Apple systems. Each program has its useful tools. Please read the documentation to learn about them. Do not attempt to write your script using a Web browser or Pro Tools (which is available via Firefox).

3. If you don't have a computer, then look around your house for these simple materials: pencil, paper, eraser, beer.

4. Once you've assembled all your materials for writing, drink the beer and start writing words on the paper (or screen, if you're using a computer). To get started on computer, plug in your keyboard (handy if it's a USB device), put your fingers on it and start to type words. They should appear on your screen. If you don't know how to type, use the paper and pencil method.

5. As you write, make sure and save your file (if you're using a computer) on your hard drive. Name your file an easy-to-remember name so you can find it again. If you are using paper and pencil, make sure you have plenty of manila folders to put your written sheets in. This protects them from spilled drinks, cat pee, etc.

Now, get started writing! Be creative. Use words with more than one syllable! If you have a thesaurus handy, don't forget to utilize it! Don't worry too much about punctuation -- a handy rule of thumb is -- the more dashes you use -- the better. Also, use plenty of apostrophes' and, commas, as well as "quote" marks. If you are writing a "technical" piece, such as for a medical narration, be sure to use lot's of words like "Stat" and "sigmoid colon" and "acanthamoeba keratitis". These will surely impress you'r client and show them that you are "in the "know"".

Good-luck, and happy "writing"!

I really appreciate the "help." I've always wanted to use more words, but I thought looking in a thesaurus would be cheating. I used a computer, so I wrote on my screen as you instructed. However, my screen does not fit in a manila folder. Please advise.

(CC-- that's the funniest thing I've read in forever!)

I actually read it twice as I thought I was being really thick!! Mello

3) Record a unique sound effect for each one required for the game and export it as an MP3 to the corresponding folder.

Be creative; a demonic monster, futuristic weapon or alien language can sound like anything you want, so play around with the effects your microphone and recording software are capable of to create engaging sound effects.

Um... er... "thanks?" Get Lost

Yes, but while we're posting to this thread how many people are reading the "How To" and actually going, "Really? Wow! I can do this!"

Probably the same kind of folks who buy those no money down real estate packages on late night TV hoping to get rich quick.

...what scares me is the new wave of clients who will use this article as a way of "proving" some of us are just padding our invoices by doing it the old fashioned way.

Oh great, now my screen has all kinds of crap on it. And I'm out of Windex. I guess I'll use the beer.

And don't forget sigmoid semi-colons.
