Hi,
I've just registered. Nice to be here. I have a gear question and a non-gear question, so I'll put both here and one in "chat" since I don't yet know the protocol.
1. I need to be able to do auditions from home, rather than always running to a studio. It's been suggested to me that I get an MBox which is loaded with ProTools and a decent mic for such basic tasks. Is that a good solution? Easy to use? I will have to buy a new computer since it requires Microsoft XP and my 5-year-old laptop can't handle it. Will a Dell 4700 series suffice?
2. I've been asked to join the union roster of reputable turnkey studio with offices in three cities around the country. I'm Screen Actors Guild eligible, but I'm leary of joining the union based on the changing v.o. landscape. On the other hand, this compnay would promote me in a way I can't as an individual. Thoughts?
Thanks a heap!

We've got a few Mbox users here. I'm a Mac gal, though, so I can't really go into the kind of computer you'll need.
M-box is a dandy little interface that lets you record into Pro Tools via USB. None of us uses it exclusively, I think the Mbox guys here also use a mixer of some kind, but you don't HAVE to have one. A great number of us produce our own VO stuff in our home studios so we have a boatload of gear anyway.
I like the Mbox. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

I started out with an M-Box. It's a good unit. One caution, through. Please make sure you check out the Digidesign website for their recommended list of computers, even Dell's. There are some chipsets that are incompatible with Pro Tools (the software simply will not work), on Dell machines.
I run a generic XP machine (made by Medion) with absolutely no problems, although the machine, itself, is not listed in the Digidesign website. And, there have been those who have reported some issues with Dell laptops.
Another inexpensive option is to get a sound card made by M-Audio. I like their solutions.
