Extract from my recent phone bill.

International calls (all to USA) - Total duration 8 hours 21 minutes
Total cost £4.35 or if you can't do the currency calculation $6.74

I think that's extremely good value.

I was just talking about this with friends last night. We recalled long distance being 25 cents, 50 cents, even a dollar or more a minute, back when a dollar was worth several dollars. Now with LD rates of 3 cents, 2 cents and even free on most cell phone plans....this is another case where the good old days weren't so good.

There was lots of skepticism when the Government broke up AT&T 25 years ago... but it turns out the resulting competition was ultimately good for the consumer.
Now with Internet alternatives, even more so.

The funny thing is, the government broke AT&T into about six or seven different companies but over the years they've been allowed to recombine into two. I guess as long as there's more than one, it works.

Yes AT&T is just as big as it ever was.

For those of you that use Gmail, they just introduced a new FREE internet phone service. "You can now call any phone in the US and Canada for free and at very low rates internationally."

From what I've hear about it the sound quality is OK, and in that regard they are still working out the bugs, but heck it's free.
