Late last night I did a radio commercial for a company in the middle east. As the job came as the result of a recommendation from a producer I know it was polite to agree to do it. Script had no timing, bad pronunciation guide and no direction. I sent an mp3 as requested. Email from producer giving different pronunciation guide and he also decided to give direction. I did it again.

I sat at my desk this morning at around 8am UK time and as there was nothing from Nadim I sent an email asking if we had agreed a fee. At 3pm another email from Nadim challenging my pronunciation of one word he had not challenged before he also said that whilst trying to "produce" the commercial there was a lot of background noise on my voice. I responed by thanking him for letting me know and suggested he find another voice.

Probably worth mentioning what happened between 2pm and 3pm today.

I read the "seems to be some noise" email following a session doing 4 TV commercials for Citizen watches via ISDN. The link up was Portgordon New York and London.

Bob (studio engineer) "Do you have any compression on your sound?"

PB "No. Clean as a whistle"

Bob "Wow. Nice sound!"

He was obviously too polite to mention the noise, bless 'im.

American's are famous for their tolerance of European noise.

Might have been the bubble and squeak cooking away on your stove top. I've had that happen to me a dozen times or more and everytime the engineer on the other side and I just laugh and laugh and laugh.

Don't assume that merely putting a cover on the pan will help. I suggest putting lots of foam and empty egg crates all over your kitchen walls and perhaps on the exterior of the fridge.

American engineers hearing isn't as finely tuned into saucepan sounds as is the Middle Eastern ear. I know a Morrocan producer who can hear couscous simmering as far as 70 feet away

But, J.S., Philip's kitchen is way more than 70 feet from the Middle East. Ninja

It's sort of north-east. At least now I am able to tell people that my studio sound is sort of bad in a non-middle eastern good way. To be more accurate it is unsuitable for over compressed sh*t radio ads.
