It looks convincing, but what if you don't have a shotgun mic? I'd have to use 3"-4" conduit for an MXL 990.

Works for me. Change the rubber-bands to o-rings and you'll have a better product. Rubber bands rot and fail.

If you're really handy, and have a small machine shop, you can use aluminum tubing.

For a large condenser break open the wallet and buy a good shock mount.

Though a good plumping supply does make 3" and 4" PVC fittings. They are expensive and weigh a ton, but they make them.

you can get a 3" or 4" pvc sleeve at lowes or home depot for $3 - $4 --- but just because you can doesn't mean you should. i like the smaller version, though.

Mike,

I have the original shock mount that came with the MXL 990. The problem is that the thumb screw has stripped and I haven't found a source replacement. The thumb screw is aluminum. I may have tightened it too hard at one time, so I'm trying to find a steel replacement.

Call MXL. I had a similar issue and they shipped me a new one at no charge. I may buy another MXL based on their good service. .

The MXL 90 basket is about $40 at Guitar Center.

With these types of baskets, adjust them so that gravity is working in your favor.
If the gooseneck keeps going limp no matter how hard you crank down on the thumbscrew,
flip it so that the wight of the mic actually works with the with the tightening action of the screw.

That makes sense... I'll try it when I get a new thumb screw or buy a new basket.
