I ordered an MBox2 from Sweetwater recently but then got this from the rep:
Quote: | I can't go into any more detail, but from me to you (hush hush), there is something new on the horizon that will be 100.00 more but may be interesting for your needs. I'm sorry I can't be very specific about it just yet, but I wanted to give you a heads up. If the 100.00 doesn't scare you on that, this might be one of those times to hang tight for a bit if you catch my drift... |
But he wouldn't let on....hmm. Anyone hear anything? Hmmmm. _________________ www.chriskoprowski.com/en |

AVID Mbox3 Family... I've heard a comment about people in The Netherlands having done some beta testing for the new product line. Since Digidesign is being rebranded tot Avid Audio (or something) they're rapidly getting rid of everything that says Digidesign on it. Most of the new stuff is merely an overhaul of the way the equipment looks. It's first and foremost just part of the transition to everything AVID. It goes without saying that they'll be adding new features and functionality to make you want to go along with the new look. I trust my ears on this, not my eyes. I do understand the rep's comments though, for I KNOW Avid is offering considerable more margin on the new stuff to help launch the redesigned stuff.
That said, I'm curious too |

this also means a great deal can be gotten on an Mbox2 mini
interested to see if there's gonna be any major sonic improvement over the 2...the features are exactly the same, except for the new slick black body and now USB 2.0 |

You'd better hurry then captain... from what I hear AVID no longer ships Mbox2 family products to retailers... I just visited my PT dealer this afternoon. He showed me a digital copy of an upcoming campaign for a hardware exchange program, meant to upgrade to AVID Mbox3 and upcoming 004. I sincerely hope that his other scary remark (a possible end of support for Mbox2 family from the supposed mid 2011 Protools 8.x release) is just a rumour... |

I already have an Mbox2 mini.....
there's a good chance the retailers will be blowing out their remaining stock of Mbox 2's....also, the prices for used will be dropping on Ebay..
I highly doubt they will discontinue support for Mbox 2......that would be a terrible move on Digi/Avid's part.... they just discontinued support for the Mbox 1, and that's been around 10 yrs. so I think the Mbox 2 has a few more years to go. |

I didn't mean stopping support for Mbox2 for PT... just a limited remainder of life in the PT8.x environment. Word is, they're already beta testing PT9... and it supposedly is unlikely that the new functionality is usable with Mbox1/2... again, I only hope it's just a rumour. |

again, I doubt that would be the case...I know Mbox 1 is already not supported for later versions of PT 8,there are millions of Mbox 2 users, as well as 002 and 003 users.....when 9 is released they'll probably make you pay a software upgrade fee like they have in the past |

There is no reason for them to look back, the whole idea is to make the previous hardware obsolete so that
you have to buy new.
"And" unless you use Protools there is no need to use the Mbox.
Spend your money on a solid quality, standalone digital interface, or sound card.
I don't like all in one anything. Because when one thing goes wrong, the whole box is generally useless. _________________ The Blog:

the upside of an all in one system, Mike, is that they were both made for each other..... |

That's the hook now isn't it? Once that hook is set, you're the reeled in-- and there is not catch and release. _________________ The Blog:

I've used Pt Le and an Mbox on a mac since it first came out about 10 yrs ago with never an issue...hundreds of hours of trouble free recording...so yeah, I guess I am hooked. |

Sure it works, I never said it didn't. But you're tethered. _________________ The Blog:

My MBox classic is obsolete. I like PTLE but usually bypass the MBox's pre and converters. So, I need a box with SPDIF ports to connect my RME ADI-2. Do I get an Mbox 2 or Mbox3? Any idea what the pres will be like in the new box? Might be nice to have another option there. _________________ www.chriskoprowski.com/en |

sure, I guess if I was recording the NY Philharmonic I might have to reconsider my use of the Mbox...
there's no question the Mbox is not the creme de la creme of audio interfaces.....heck, my MicPort Pro is even a marked improvement.
you've got your TC Electronics, Rme's, Echo Audio, Apogee's ... no intelligent person can argue that these aren't better..
seriously....to the ears of the vast majority of the human population the differences are subtle....and I seriously doubt that any VO artist has lost work because they were using an Mbox and not an Rme/Echo/Appogee/TcElectronics......use an outboard converter or preamp with the Mbox and its even less of an issue |
