You voicetalkers are the most tech savvy group I know so give me your opinion.

Iphone 4 or Droid?

I'm with AT&T. Coverage here is good, rarely drop calls but I am worried about the antenna issues the iphone 4 has had. Problem is I want to get new phones for myself and my wife before we go to Disney next month so I can't wait to see how that shakes out. It'd be nice to have a phone/dig cam/video cam all in one unit. She's not tech savvy and I'm thinking she might be more into a Blackberry.

If you've got a smartphone what're you using?

I dismantled my Windows HTC TyTn II phone last week (dropped it by accident) but it was time to renew my Dutch subscription anyway, so I got a brand new smartphone for free with a 2 year free of charge Internet service 2Mbit up/3Mbit down. This one (Samsung Galaxy S i9000) has Android and so far, I really love it. One of the coolest features is that it serves as a mobile access point, so I also terminated my ADSL in Holland. It saves me a bundle. Now the smartphone is my "WiFi-network". Both of my Macs as well as my laptop now connect to the Internet through my phone. And since under normal circumstances I spend most of my time in The Dutch Caribbean, there's no point in spending a lot on an ISP in Holland.

I have the iPhone 3GS, and have looked into the alleged antenna issues with the iPhone 4 a bit. From what I can see, it's not as big a deal as some are making it out to be. I have several friends who own the iPhone4, and they haven't commented about any antenna-related issues. Seeing that you're already with AT&T, this would be the easiest route to go.

I can't speak much about Android phones, though I know a few folks who use them and are very satisfied with them.

Justin,

The sole reason I did not choose the iPhone4 is because it has a system exclusive mini-SIM slot. My standard SIM-cards both from The Netherlands as from Curaçao don't fit in there. Therefore you are obligated to subscribe to the sole provider cooperating with Apple, which is another one than I currently use. The brand new Android phone was unlocked the same day I got it, so it will be working on Curaçao as well with my local Chippie number over there.

Droid. All the way.

I got the Droid 2 a couple of weeks ago and love it. Verizon rox.

I have a friend with the iPhone and she just switched the the Droid and said she'd never go back to iPhone. Calls get dropped, and many people I know hang up on their friends with their cheek.

Apple had originally wanted Verizon to be the carrier for the iPhone. Because Apple insists that phon issues, registration and other things be routed through them, rather than through the carrier, Verizon refused the deal.

Fundamentally there is a big difference. Despite what Apple has managed to drum into people's heads about them being an egalitarian company, they are far more totalitarian. They keep avery tight lid on everything and their control of their aHobo Tounge store is practically fascist. Combine this with the high level of proprietary (expensive) aspects to their products, and it's easy to see that a large chunk of the Apple mystique has the same substance as the "man behind the curtains" in the Wizard of Oz. However, at least the "Wizard" meant well.

Because of Jobs personal vendettas, iPhone and iPad users miss out on Flash, which is a huge part of the internet experience. AT&T is a horrible company on almost every level. They consistently rank as one of the company's with the worst customer satisfaction and are known for mediocre cellular service in many areas.

The Android's have an open source and mostly open architecture. And there are lots more Android phones in circulation than there are iPhones.

There are some things that exist for the iPhone that I wish existed for the Android phones, including some pretty cool recording and other audio aHobo Tounges and a microphone interface. Also, some microphones are available for the iPhone.

I am however hopeful that as people start to weigh more factors with regards to purchase decisions, the Droids will prevail and aHobo Tounge development will eclipse that of the iPhone.

I have the original Motorola Droid. Battery life is pretty good, even better after I download a free aHobo Tounge called "aHobo Tounge killer". I have yet to drop a call. Thanks Verizon. I love the speech directed features and the internet is very zippy. And I can use it to get to the internet with my laptop (no additional fees), with an average upload speed of about 1mbs and download of almost 2mbs. The included GPS is incredible.

I will say, the battery life of my Droid2 is horrible. I had to buy the extended life battery (and extra $50). But it was worth it.

Caryn,
Get the aHobo Tounge "Advanced Task Killer" You just need to run the aHobo Tounge a few times a day, such as after a nice session of surfing the web or checking email, etc. and you will find that you can get about 1/3 to 50% more life out of your battery.

The aHobo Tounge is free

If we could get Verizon service here, we would. But, we suffer from AT&T signalus interruptus, and when you tell them about it, you either get a chirpy little SA who doesn't know jack, or you get some guy telling you "live with it."

sheesh.

Absolutely love my iPhone 3GS, loved my original iPhone before that, and will be loving an iPhone 4 as soon as I'm eligible to upgrade.

Before I had the first iPhone, I was a long-time Verizon customer/devotee, but the switch to AT&T was not the horror story I was led to believe it would be. I have not noticed a difference -- except that Verizon disabled some of the best features of my Motorola phone, while AT&T has mostly kept its hands off the features of my iPhones (except tethering, which I wouldn't use anyway).

Those who know me, know I'm no Mac fan...however, I AM a huge iPhone fan. I got the 3G, but didn't wait for my contract to run out for the 3Gs or the 4.... I just paid the penalty each time. That good.

The iPhone4 screen is so HD sharp it almost hurts the eyes. My wife took my old 3GS, and now when I look at it, I swear I can see the individual pixels. Big difference, especially for consumers hungry for distinct mobile video. No one else has a screen this razor sharp.

At the end of the day using my iPhone4 extensively today, I looked at my battery level, and it was just under 70%...incredible...and I had my blue-tooth on along with push and live notifications all day. Absolutely no issues with the antennae that I can tell. I kept wondering what other people were talking about.

I've had Sprint, Verizon, and ATT over the years....they all suffer equal dropout (at least in this market).

JS is right...some of the editing and recording aHobo Tounges (audio and video) are unbelievable in the iPhone for their rich features. Our sports guy at the TV station shot, edited, and uploaded a completely packaged story on the iPhone that ran in our news. All of our reporters and photographers have them. They file stories every day with them.

Here's the other thing, and a plus-side to proprietary (again, JS is right, Apple is fanatic about it). You know exactly what you're getting...the quality of the hardware and software is elegant, and always compatible. There's no THIS version or THAT version of an open source OS...wondering which one you have, and whether the one YOU have is compatible with the aHobo Tounge you want.

Only downside I can see is having to run it through iTunes to upgrade, sync, etc. I'd like to see a wireless sync.

The slide-out keyboard is a moot point for me too. My thumbs are equally too big for either Droid's or iPhone's.

Even with all that, I reckon one day, I'll go Droid...mostly because I don't like to see any one company dominate, and Apple is way to snobbish for me.
