Twice in the past month I've been asked to either quote on or accept a job for a stated rate based on a French version of a script. I don't speak any foreign languages, so these would've been English narrations. However, as some of you may know, getting an accurate word count (and, thereby, length) is not possible, as foreign languages don't necessarily use the same number of words as the English version of the same script.
I got bit last time I accepted a job based on a French script that was estimated at 15 minutes, only to learn after recording and editing that the English version was 21 minutes.
The script that I was sent this morning was said to be two minutes. And while I don't know if the same word-to-time formula would apply in a foreign language script, this script - at 150 words per minute - would've been almost six minutes in length, not two.
They want a narration in English? Wonderful! But have them give you the English version of the script to estimate or quote by.
