But why $30? Why something so far below what even the low-budget people are willing to pay?

Why not make it $150? They'd likely have more clients (because wouldn't most people be afraid to hire a $30 VO?) and they'd surely be making more per gig.

Choosing such a randomly low number just announces to the world that they don't know much about this business, and that they have a small-market local radio world view.

Because they can. I had a station I was doing some stuff for a few years ago (at an already reduced rate because I used to work for the guy). Time went by and I hadn't heard from him, so when I ran into him some time later he came up to me all apologetic and admitted that as much as he liked my stuff, it was hard for him to justify the expense when he could get the "dollar-a-holler" guys for next to nothing. His clients didn't care, they were "good enough", and all he really cared about was having a few voices other than the regular jocks voicing stuff.

Life goes on...

I like the idea! For most people who faff about with the likes of VOcannuck and void123 it is a gift ....your voice will do matey.com and for most of the jobs rattling around the internet YOUR voice WILL do.

In the UK the local commercial radio market (VOs on ISDN) tends to work on the basis of he who answers the phone gets the job, within reason. The union minimum rate for the average sized commercial radio station per ad is $32.

In the "YOUR voice WILL do" market it's about being ok, about volume, about not auditioning and about NOT faffing about. The maximum number of Union minimum rate ads I've done in one session is 37. 37x $32 = $1184 ...How many times per week would you need to do that in order to make a living?

October is going to be "Equality of treatment month". We acknowledge that an ad on K-WeHaveNoRealAudience 1175am is only worth $30 and in return clients like the aforementioned station stop behaving like The New Saatchi Agency and wanting 5 auditions, 7 takes and free re-takes.

Here's your Branding statement "I read it well, in time for $30..Then you **** off!"

Exact same thing happened to me. The station owner told me he was getting produced spots from one of these companies for $100 a month. It was one of these types of companies, but not sure who.

There is a popular freelancing site where the going rate per vo project is $30. It's a site where "good enough" clients meet "mediocre" talent. The freelancers there seem to be more interested in getting the job than making a living. Maybe they're all non-proffit orgs? Hmmm...

What's really sad? I listened to snippets of each of their talents and almost half of them could (and maybe do) charge more traditional rates elsewhere. Why they're selling out I couldn't guess.

The quality of the other half of them?.....well, if you can't say something nice.....

The genius behind this latest dollar a holler venture is the VA "Ernie" listed at the bottom of the roster. I've had dealings with "Ernie".

He's based here in Texas. In recent months several clients have contacted both of us to quote for gigs. And he's won them all as a result of low-balling.

The most recent incident happened a couple of weeks ago. I was asked to quote a 5300 word text. I bid around $700. I got an email from the cleint that "Ernie" was coming in much lower at like $250. I just shook my head.

Then a few minutes later "Ernie" had the audacity ( no software pun intended) to phone me to discuss the job we were both up for. A really chatty, "Happy Harry" type. He was trying to get me to disclose the rate I was bidding."

"What business is that of yours?" I asked in a pretty irritated tone.
"Eh, hey... if my call is making you feel uncomfortable..."
"Your dime. And and no, I'm not uncomfortable. Just pissed."
"Hey, dude, we're all in this together. Why am I irritating you?"

Then there were a few moments of silence as I started counting to ten. I got to twelve and simply could not hold my composure.

"Hey, 'doood', you're a low-baller. You'll probably win this gig, and you'll feel all proud of yourself. But here's what you're doing. You're screwing yourself! You're lowing the bar of expectation with this client and all clients you come in contact with! And in the end, you're screwing all the men and woman who bust their asses daily to make a decent living in VO! Ya gettin' a clue here?

"Men AND women?! He replied. "Man, we all know this is a man's business. I mean, they're good for some things, but it's a cash crop for us. guys."

At that point I was speechless. Then I said...

"Man, I gotta get off the line. This is winding up in a hole, and when I'm in hole I stop diggin' and look for a ladder."
"Well, okay. Let's talk again, okay?"

"It won't be on my dime. I can assure you that!"

Two days later the client emailed me again. He apologized for making a hasty hire, and assured me I'll be his voice on the next project.

I hit delete.

it's bad enough when somebody does something nasty.

it's worse when they've got to call you up and brag about it.

you had more tact than i would have shown.

What's really sad about this is. if the spots are going for 30 bucks a pop, "Ernie" -- or whoever is running this outfit -- is taking his cut out of that, so the talent is probably getting only $10-15 a whack.

BTW, I just listened to the VO samples. Those are presumably the best 7 or 8 voices in their roster. None was horrible; none was outstanding. They were all, in the words of my former roommate, "superbly adequate."

Wow. I can think of so many women whose VO paychecks per annum most certainly dwarf his; I may well be one of them. This guy's got some nerve.
