Ever had that?
My favourite showbiz story is about a TV interview between UK "Celeb" Jordan aka Katie Price and Chelsea Handler.
Handler "So why don't you explain to everbody (US TV audience) what you do"
Price - with a grand and evasive sparkle "Well, how long have you got?"
Handler "6 minutes"
We need to be able to tell the difference between the cocktail party conversation and the exchange between people engaging in a professional exchange. A couple of years ago in a bar a friend was being hit on by a man and he was telling her about his job as an airline pilot. My friend enjoyed the exchange and made polite, light, chit chat. The man was clearly not an airline pilot and my friend would know because she IS a pilot with over 25,000 flying hours. Did she "call him out"? Of course not.
Now to the day job. We'll keep using the same example. Lauren is sat in the right seat of an Embraer 195. As a Type Rating Examiner she is expecting an airline pilot to sit in the left hand seat and show her what he can do, indeed that he is qualified, has the REAL knowledge to do it.
What's that got to do with us? Keeps the "being spiney" theme in focus.
What people think is interesting, what people think they know can be engaging or interesting but when it comes to your career you need to know the people who really KNOW. |
