VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

Just a quick note of remembrance for my friend of 30 years, actor Michael Sharvell-Martin, who passed away in late October from cancer. I just found this out today when a Xmas card arrived from his wife with the sad news. I had been meaning to get in touch more often than just the card for the last year or so but things got heavy, the old story...

Ever since he answered my fan letter in early 1980 we corresponded, he seemed bemused that a 15-yr old kid from the US could be so interested in all things UK and Britcom, but I was. Starting in 1984 I visited him and his family a few times, including my wife's & my honeymoon (staying in the Hammersmith flat of his "No Place Like Home" co-star William Gaunt, and on the honeymoon, attending a taping of the show with Michael on film only that week, meaning he sat with us in the BBC bleachers).

During my first visit he went up in to the attic of his 1690-era stone cottage, let out a cackle, and tossed down what turned out to be a bunch of original Benny Hill and Dave Allen scripts from 1969-1975. I still have them to this day.

He was a great actor and a true gentleman. I'll really miss him.

Oh, I'm sorry to see this. I too watched a LOT of those shows back in the day, when PBS showed them, and recall that I appreciated this particular fellow quite a bit.

My condolences on the loss of your friend, Chris.
