I'm prepping a narration of a book with some rather obscure Greek mythological characters and places but not sure of some of the pronunciations. I've found several online sources that have helped some, such as http://www.pantheon.org/miscellaneous/pronunciations.html, but none are extensive enough. Might anyone here know of a more comprehensive one, or, failing that, general pronunciation guidelines?
From my study of the subject in the past (which now seems very long past), I can extrapolate some, such as "c" is pronounced as "k" and names ending "oe" is pronounced "oh-ee". Then there's the matter of which syllable to stress...

Had to read Plato in college. Untranslated. Totally rusty, but names are way easier to remember. Helps that I am a mythology nut.

That is so impressive, Brad. I've read lots of mythology as well, but usually silently so the pronunciations were pretty much my own best guess. I appreciate the help -- thanks!

I can pronounce the names of most Greek food. I suppose it's priroties.

If yo need to pronounce any words like souvlaki or avgolemeno, let me know.

I do a couple of shows on a Shoutcast station every week and the station owner is Greek. Half his Facebook posts are unreadable to me. Laugh

If you need I can probably get him to record the names for you so you can hear a native say them. Obviously there's a big difference between classic and modern Greek, but it may be useful.

Thanks so much, Corey, but Brad has been able to give me the phonetics I need.

Anyway, modern day Greeks are better at reading words in their own alphabet than our Anglicized versions of their words. And mythology is its own area of expertise. I suppose it's like asking an Italian to read some Latin for you. (Which, by the way, I can read since I took 4 years of it in high school. And grew up Catholic.)

And, J. S., you'll be the man I call from my restaurant table when I go to that authentic Greek place that just opened up nearby.

Glad you got what you needed! Laugh

And now I wish that little place down the street from my old office was still around. I'd wander in there for lunch and order pita bread, hummous and kalamata olives with a glass of ice water. Sometimes I'd have a salad of grape leaves with feta. Very simple, yet so utterly delicious.
