Doesn't look like it's gonna be available until May or so, but wow!
Clicky for Geargasm
The Alesis StudioDock will offer twin 1/4-inch XLR inputs and twin XLR outputs, phantom power, along with a headphone socket, video output and MIDI in/out.
And it seems that a proprietary audio a won't be required, so you can use it with the a of your choice.
I might have just talked myself into getting an iPad. _________________ Doug Turkel (tur-KELL)

Hmm I could go with that. _________________ The Blog:

I might be able to rationalize replacing my weak-kneed netbook with a 10 in screen. What kind of rep does Alesis have for audio gear? _________________ Best regards,

I wonder how much this little gadget weighs? The iPad WiFi/3G comes in at 1.6 lb.
Presently my road setup includes a 13" MacBook (4.5 lb) with an Mbox mini (1.12 lb), along with a mic and a passel of cords. A lighter load could be a real help.
Of course one of the advantages of using a "real" computer is that it comes with "real" productivity software.

Alesis has a mixed rep, mostly good. They created the ADAT recorder which was the mainstay of digital recording back in the 90's. They mostly specialize in studio and live audio gear and instruments, so this sounds like a new direction for them. This is new enough and the iPad is new enough that I think I'd wait at least until some reviews are out.
Of course this is coming from a guy who's bought first year models of a number of cars over the years (big, big mistake every time).

Thanks for posting that, George. Question: why do you think the Macbook Air/MicPort Pro would be preferable to the iPad/Alesis combo? Portability only, or performance as well? Also, what recording software would be preferable in both the iPad and Macbook Air configurations?

I think that George's comment about the MacBook Air is pretty valid. If you're using it as a small portable rig, the size/weight differential is minimal, plus (as the big upside to the Air solution) you get to use all your existing software (rather than just the basic recording a s on the iPad) with all the advantages of a laptop (keyboard etc). The only small downside is the additional cost of the Air (min $1000 plus the MicPortPro)... although you're getting right up into that region if you're getting a loaded iPad with the Alesis interface.
If I was looking to built a ($1000ish) portable rig from scratch, then I'd go with the Air+M and get all the other laptop advantages... but as I already own an iPad, it's a $200 solution that should get better and better as higher quality editing a s appear (OK, it's a cool toy as well)
I guess the bottom line is that if you have (or are lusting after) an iPad, then this makes it a viable recording rig... but if you have no alternate need for one, then other solutions may be more beneficial. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Not a big fan of anything Alesis, but this does look pretty slick. I didn't see this at NAMM this year though, I wonder why they didn't show it??
Looking at the site, it doesn't say if it need external power or it draws from the ipad. My understanding of the ipad's doc is that is doesn't send power down like a standard USB can. If this thing has a wall-wart..... not thanks. That aint portable anymore |

Yep, needs a wall-wart. This was shot at NAMM, so it was there, but they didn't make a big deal out of it at all. Alesis released a similar gadget for the iPhone 3 years ago, and it never took off. I reviewed it in my blog. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Regarding Alesis but for drums— Guitar Boy recently got a set of E-drums by Alesis and did a recommended software update on the module.
Didn't work, bricked the module. They're saying it's his fault and they may not cover it. He sent it to them and we're hoping for the best.
Just warning yez. _________________ DBCooperVO.com
