I've just sent the following note via email to m'lovely friend Cris Dukehart and thought it was worth sharing for no reason other than I did.

Imagine a day like today, roughly the same time. It's 1942 and you're walking from your home in Sydling road, Yeovil, Somerset on your way to work. You're in your late teens and your job is to help build aircraft at the Westland factory.

Not too far from a popular meeting point in the town centre called The Borough you glance up at the low clouds to see the source of a low droning sound. Dark and large an aeroplane comes into view. Your gaze moves from the lumbering vision in the sky to The Borough and the hypnotic engine noise is suddenly punctuated by the sound of its machine guns opening fire on the people below.

If your name was Barbara, you would be my mother and this would've been your story to tell.

I love it when Philip writes things.
This just shows how a few well-crafted words can evoke a world.

There was somewhat, well slightly, similar experience in my Dad's life. His father worked for a large American company in Asia and they lived in Shanghai from the mid 1920's to late 30's. About 1937 the Japanese were taking over more and more of China including the Chinese portion of Shanghai. There were American, British and French sections of the city (ah, our old imperial ways) which the Japanese avoided attacking to avoid bringing those countries into the war, but they put the pressure on by coming as close to those areas as possible with bombs and strafing. When it was decided that the women and children should leave, my family and others took transport craft out to the steamer ships in the harbor. Somewhere in the dusty files I have an amateur film taken by them during that journey of the Japanese Zeros strafing the water near these boats and others as a way of saying, "don't come back".

Luckily, I was able to show my Dad the movie Empire of the Sun before he faded into the world of Parkinson's, and he said the opening segments about the Western lifestyle in Shanghai and then the panicky exodus of the expats were right on the money.

May we never have to see the violence our elders did.
