I went to Alcatraz Island on Sunday. They have a really super splendid audio tour! It's loaded with ambient sounds and voices of guys who were there, either working or as prisoners.

This collection is of the sound montages they made for the tour, without the guide's parts.

It was chilling to be sure. What a place.

That tour was produced by Antenna Productions, and is one of the few things they've created that doesn't have a professional v.o. talent on it. The main voice belongs to a former prison guard.

I'm lucky enough to work for these guys, who also produce historical audio pieces for Discovery. When you watch some show and you hear a voice come on that's supposed to be a sea captain from 1876 or a pirate from 1612, etc., it could be me.

If you visit the Getty Museum in SoCal, The Alamo or the Jewish Museum in New York, you'll get to hear me on their tour.

The old ferry service that used to run between San Francisco and Alcatraz featured my voice telling everyone about the features of the twin inboard engine craft and where the life preservers are located. They even let me rie for free a few times.

Oh another interesting fact is that the Birdman of Alcatraz (Robert Stroud)never kept birds when he was incarverated at Alcatraz.

He had almost no priveldges there. Prior to his stay at Alcatraz, Stroud was incarcerated at Leavenworth, where he had foud sparrows who became wounded from the various barbed wire enclosures, etc. It was here that he tended to the birds and got the nickname Birdman. Apparently the nickname followed him to the "Rock".
