Anybody else get THIS little 'casting call' (and not instantly think F*** YOU ??)
Quote: | Opportunity for significant ongoing, daily work. This is for non-broadcast,
narrowcast use. I am posting this again because less than 20% of people
followed instructions on my last posting. As a heads up, based on my last
posting, there are a lot of competant talent with very fair prices--so the
$500/hour responses would do best to just skip this posting. Hundreds of
people respond to each and every posting--and I am pretty amazed by how
many people take the time to respond to these leads--even with custom
demos--but don't bother to read the request and follow instructions. Any
response that does not follow directions will be deleted without review. I am
looking to establish relationships with a number of voiceover artists and I
need people with an attention to detail. First, record the custom demo below.
Nothing but your read of the script should be on the demo. No tag lines,
stingers, no messages to me pitching who you are, etc. If you have some
variety in your voice, feel free to give me up to three takes: one Walter
Cronkite, one "friend next door" and one "church reader"--again, don't
narrate your demo and tell me "this is my Walter Cronkite version" Just do
three different takes--I don't need the explanation. Second, on your response, you will enter a price in a box on the response form. You will enter your price as $XXX/per 20 hour month. This price is the amount to purchase 20 hours of your talent, used one hour per day, Sunday night through Thursday night. Any response that does not reply in this format will be deleted without
review. This includes all the "Your Budget", "Negotiable" and any other
comment you put in that box. Finally, the response form gives you a box for
remarks. You will copy and paste these questions and provide your answers to
the folowing questions: (1) Explain your voiceover business. Do you do this
full time or part time? What is your website's URL? If part time, what other obligations do your have that impact your availability. Will you be available for regular work, one hour per night Sunday through Thursday? (2) Explain your studio setup. What microphone do you use? Do you have a sound booth or how professional is your setup? How do you maintain a low noise floor on your recordings? (3) Do you record on a PC or a Mac? What is your Internet connection UPLOAD speed? Who provides this connection and what type of connection is it. |
What a joy this guy must be to work with.
I hit the delete key on this guy faster than he did on his previous 'respondees.'
(Then thought twice and said, 'hey, this is such a laugh, i gotta at least share it).
If you get the 'gig,' please tell me how it goes! LOL.
Sorry, but i've been in this biz too long to have some asshole 'speak'to me this way (let alone in the context of Voice123 - but, guess ya gotta consider the source in that respect).
I shouldn't waste time caring, but after recently describing here previously how NOT to Direct a talent--this struck me as a perfect sequel (maybe it's the same guy?) --How not to write up an audition!!...(or should that be, 'win friends and influence people.?)
Cheers

I couldn't agree with you more, Mike. He sounds like a tool.
Is it just me, or do any of you receive the leads that say in big, bold type DO NOT CALL US UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES or ONLY SUBMIT THE COPY BELOW-ALL DEMOS WILL BE DELETED? I know it's juvenile, but at times I want to go out of my way to (A) call them and act like a complete newby only to finish with some sort of rant littered with expletives and mentioning their mother, and ( Record a 'custom' demo berating them.
More and more, V123 is attractive less and less.

Yes, but the last time I checked 82 people were willing to be subjected to the abuse. _________________ Enjoy life, this is not a rehearsal.

Another fine example as to why I would never sign up with this service! |

I instantly shot a note titled, "Insulted" to the VOICE123 people. I don't expect them to give a rat's bottom about it. I don't know why this particular insult stood out more than the tons of others that have come through the service. But it did. _________________ Patricia Shanks

Sounds like a guy who was exasperated, dispapointed and a little angry that he got replies to his request from a lot of people that didn't read and follow his instructions. Following directions is a major part of what we do, so we all might be a bit wiser to re-read his specs and think about them the next time we audition. None of his requests were particularly egregious or rude.
I'll bet that sessions with him would go lickity-split since he knows what he wants.

If you are seriously offended by his requests, you are in for a rude, rude awakening. Every producer of quality I have worked with has asked the same questions and made the same requests, furthermore, his requests were straight forward.
These are the people with whom you need to be working. _________________ Genus |

With people who think that five C-notes is too much to ask for twenty hours of VO work?
Just because he's demanding doesn't necessarily make him a "producer of quality". _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.

Having put up a number of bids through Voice 123, I can say some of his complaints are valid. At least half of the responses you get are sloppy, rambling, and idiotic. Bidders don't observe your simplest requests, and the begging for work and low-balling from some of the least talented applicants is really sad. If you can wade through his verbal vomit there are actually some good pointers in there on how to impress, and not impress a producer.
However, that being said, the guy sure appears to be so full of himself he's likely to explode. Pity da fool who gets the gig.

Still tough...as a talent, you rarely (if ever) make "forward progress" by telling someone off. I'm no doormat, but I learned a long time ago (probably from the Army) that a closed mouth in those type of situations will not only save what you've already gained, but also earn you some respect. I have a few people on speed dial to whom I can vent. After I tell my friend what "I plan to tell that asshole"...I can call the client and handle their requests/demands like a big boy.
When a lead like that comes along, you can either delete it & still be able to work for him in the future....or you can fire off a nasty response & secure a spot in the "hell no" file with him & who knows how many of his collegues.
I hope to one day attain the clout to required to say whatever is on my mind (ala Orson Welles), but until then...I'll just keep it to myself. |
