I just pulled the trigger on a Michael Joly mod for my Rode NT1a, and I'm in the market for a better boom stand.
I recall that there was discussion last year about something solid and secure but when I search I can't find it.
I've been using an Atlas boom stand, and have to sandbag it when using the RE-20, which is heavy but not that heavy..
Suggestions? _________________ Company, villainous company, hath been the spoil of me...

i like mike's solution! you could also weight the other end of the mic boom to counter. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

How about this?

Yes, it's more expensive than the mic, but it's beautiful! _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

whoa, that Relevator is some nice engineering!
But I do like the weight on the base of the stand. I know I have some cast iron in a milk crate around here somewhere.
That's just brilliant and looks a lot more stable than my sandbag, and easier to manipulate. _________________ Company, villainous company, hath been the spoil of me...

I do like that stand George. It's way overdone, but that's the appeal. _________________ The Blog:

We use the Relevator, with a twin mount in the top, to take two separate sprung boom arms. It certainly is a lovely piece of engineering, and it has made a big difference to the isolation of the mics from the odd rumbles, bumps and moans that our ancient building occasionally emits. _________________ Charles Nove

It sure is pretty, but $800 for a boom stand when you can buy a decent standard model and a shock mount for about $160? And it's got pointy things for feet. The missus will have none of that on our nice wood floors, no siree.

The Atlas SB36W boom...Two-piece horizontal boom assembly is...
Most of the time I only have half the horizontal boom in place giving me
a solid 30 inch boom. If it's offered skip the casters for a fixed set up.

When I upgraded the windows in my house, I saved all the sash weights -- just in case. Now I know what to do with a couple of them. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Monk how do you like the mod? I have a NT1a that collects dust because I don't care for the quality but would be interested if the mod was worth the investment...speaking of which do you mind sharing the cost? edit...nevermind the cost question...google is my friend
Thanks |

I shipped it out to him a week or so ago, I expect to see it back by April.
I'll give a full report then.
I wasn't overly pleased with my NT1a, it sounded a little brittle to me, chrome sounding if that makes sense. So I'm hoping that his work will make it my new favorite thing.

I had a client in New Zealand ship a Rode to the US for mod and it came back, in her words, destroyed. If you like I'll ask her what modder she sent it to... _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
