The direct route from point A to B may not necessarily be the most interesting - or the best one to follow.

In short, when in doubt NDF and VOR navigational skills are great, but your best bet for staying on course is knowing how to program (or even have for that matter) an FMC.
Additionally, VFR is fun, but IFR will get you farther.
Sorry - 'been doing way too much flight simulator lately.
