A couple times a week, I need to wake up very early in the morning and bang out a newscast.

Unfortunately, my tongue (and eyes) sometimes seem to protest- instead of 'trippingly on the tongue', the speech just trips.

Looking uggestions for things to get up and running more quickly- brief vocal warmups, etc,

Anyone else experience this? Beyond the obvious like a shower and a quick cup of coffee, what do you do?

[BTW simply waking up or going to bed earlier is usually not a viable option]

I wish I had the answer. I am so NOT a morning person. I can't believe in the 70's I did a morning radio show for a couple of years.

It takes me at least and hour, a hot shower, and several cups of coffee to begin functioning as human being. Don't get in my way before I am fully awake. I tend to trip over things and run into walls.

Singing something fun may be helpful. I used to get my VO class in Boston invigorated with rousing choruses of "BINGO' and "Old MacDonald Had a Farm".

I was going to suggest singing too. I used to do morning drive radio news, and I'd sing in the car along with the radio on the way to the station (about a ten minute drive)....so crank the i tunes and sing a bit before you open your mic.
Also a crap load of coffee helped me....but it can also give you insane amounts of mouth noise.

Stretching major muscle groups seems to help a lot of people wake up more quickly. Torso, low back, arms, legs, facial muscles. It takes the muscles out of relaxed sleep mode and tells the body you're ready to move now, whether you really are or not.

Put a cork in it. Run through as much of your script with a cork in your mouth. Then record.

What Eddie said-plus facial stretching with various mouth contortions but the cork usually does the trick.
