Today, July 11, is the 49th anniversary of the first trans-Atlantic television transmission - via Telstar I, America's first telecommunications satellite. Today, we take live shots from around the world for granted. But before the technology became mainstream, reports from other countries were shot on film and sent back home to be processed and edited before they were aired.
The first long distance telephone call via satellite was also carried by Telstar on this day in 1962.
Meanwhile, over in England, music producer Joe Meek, inspired by watching the launch of Telstar, composed a musical tribute to the satellite. He brought The Tornadoes, a surf-rock instrumental group, into the studio to record the song, which vaulted to #1 in the U.K. and the U.S. (where it remained the top song for three weeks).
As such, ‘Telstar’ marks not only the birth of the telecommunications era, but also the true beginning of music’s ‘British Invasion,’ having reached the top of the U.S. charts a full year before The Beatles. _________________ Mike
