If anybody is familiar with the M-audio USB interface, please advise…

I have the M-audio Fast Track USB interface (1-XLR mic input w/ phantom power, 1-¼" 'guitar' input and a phones jack…knobs on top)

I'm not using the mic in/phantom power, but instead running out from my preamp to the 'guitar' in.

If I'm not using phantom power, is the Fast Track itself still a preamp as I'm using it?

The phantom power is just for certain mics that need a power source for their electronics— like condenser mics.

The 1/4" input would engage the pre with the button OUT, in guitar mode, and bypass it with the button IN, which is line-in mode.

That's what I think, anyway. There is an output knob, but I'm not sure if that just drives the headphones.

Deirdre,

Thanks for your response! The only button on the front panel is the "Direct Monitoring" button. I use this to bypass any latency while recording. The middle dial on the top is for the "guitar input" level. This is the input I plug my pre into...

With all the discussion of combining pre's over the last several days, I want to make sure my interface isn't preamplified. I can find nothing in the manual to this question.

And yes, the output dial drives the phones...

Hmm— there's a button on the back of mine.

I wonder if the guys in the DigiDesign forums might be more abolute in an answer for you?

The switch on the back of mine is the phantom power switch. But I do appreciate your thoughtfulness and the link Deirdre!

To the best of my knowledge, no matter what you'll still be passing thru a preamp stage with the Fastrack Pro, but it generally sounds fine.
If you find out otherwise, please let us know!
