Recently I responded to a job posting on Voices.com, submitted my demo and quoted my price. Yesterday, I received the following e-mail from the job poster:
You had submitted an audition last week for a short PSA I am doing for the Scotiabank Walk for Life. I think your submission is exactly what I am looking for hands down. Because it is a video for charity I am creating this video for free for them. They have, however, allowed me a hundred dollar budget for the vocal talent. I do not mean to disrespect your craft by any means, but would you be willing to consider reducing your rate because of the cause behind the video? If so I can send you the final script and transfer the funds immediately. I respect any decision you make and wanted to thank you for taking the time to submit a sample.
How could I refuse? Of course, I agreed to do the VO, which prompted the producer to send me the following reply:
I can't begin to thank you enough for your cooperation in this project. Once I heard your voice I knew it was the only one I could use, so I had to take my chances and ask you. The Commitee as well are very appreciative.
I hope my friends in Toronto will let me know if they see it.

In life, and business, when we act with respect and ethics and high moral ground, it normally comes back to us in some form or another. And the opposite is true.
Knowing you, Lee, I'm not at all surprised by this story. I'm just glad that it happened to such a genuinely nice guy as you. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

Believe me, I did not post this to call attention to my own generosity of spirit (if I were that magnanimous I wouldn't take the c-note); I was just impressed with the professionalism of the producer. The way he expressed his understanding of the value of what it is we do, in addition to the worthiness of his cause, is what prompted me to agree to the job. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
