While they don't seem to have a store in Winnipeg, check Long & McQuade - http://www.long-mcquade.com/ - I got most of my equipment there. They are knowledgable and very nice. It looks as if they are having a big sale on now as well.
Another Canadian source is Saved by Technology here in Toronto: http://www.savedbytechnology.com/ _________________ Elaine

That's great - when I checked their store location list, I didn't notice Winnipeg.
This week - until June 3rd they are having a sale on a bunch of mics. Marshall MXL770 is on sale the final week in June. So you might want to check them out - maybe you can get a good deal on a mic. Here's a list of their weekly specials for the next month.

For the rest of you who might think even the sale prices are kinda high - remember this is Canadian dollars. And although the Canadian dollar is high right now - it doesn't seem to translate into immediate savings for us. _________________ Elaine

No idea about dealers, but ditto Banksey's recommendation of the B1. Unlike the other mics in the same price range the B1 is very neutral and unhyped. Bill the Elder bought one on my recommendation and has been very happy with it - or so he says. He could just be trying not to hurt my feelings.

The B1 at $99 US appears to be the best bang for the buck around. I don't see that price disccounted very often, but some dealers seem to offer a free cable, or shock mount or even a stand. Try Google's Froogle service to compare offers.

Mike, my friend...and you are!
The truth is that the Studio Projects was a great recommendation and I recommend it to others. Back when I bought it I think it was $70. Hindsight being what it is, I wish I had sprung for the B-3 which includes selectable patterns like omni, cardioid, figure 8, high pass filter and 10db Pad.
Great suggestion and I use it all the time. |

RVA Canada in Markham, Ontario.
They are a pro audio dealer...not an overpriced music store thay just happens to sell audio products as well.
They have excellent selection and prices. Give Tony or Ian a call at 1-866-782-6934. |

Bill....I know I'm chiming in on someone elses post, but I am new to this and looking to replace my mic too.....what is the benefit of one pattern over another? I mean, when/why would you use the figure 8 over the cardioid over the omni etc....I realize they must fit different situations, but I have no idea which would be best for what situation. _________________ TG2

The different patterns pick up different areas around the mic. So if you are doing solo voice over work etc...you would not want the figure eight pattern selected because you would be picking up extra noise from room bounce etc....the cardioid patern pick up the front area of the mic and phase cancel all other noise to the back of the mic. I think Bill just wanted something with more options....
As far as a good studio mic for the price, Audio Technica makes some good quality stuff for the price. Not sure if they still sell the AT4033 but it was like $300.00 when I bought one many years ago. I am sure they have some other newer models too, _________________ Ben

TGG,
I'm sorry I was more interested in the high pass filter and 10db Pad than the pattern. BenWils is right about that. But, I haven't really felt that the B1 wasn't up to any task I've given it. |

My Studio Projects B1 is probably the best $80 I've spent in a while. |
