Haven't heard of anyone using this mic around these here parts for a while. The PR 40 seems to get some great reviews, has anyone around here used one or IS using one. I think Lance Blair used one at some stage...is that right Lance?...what happened to it? This mic could be a great travel mic. Love to hear your thoughts and findings, also how it compares to the SM7b and the RE-20.
Cheers

Lance liked it at first (I don't think he posts here any more, sorry to say). But then he ended up hating it. You can find his thoughts evolving here if you do a search of the archives. I bought one and used it off and on for about 8 months. But then I sold it. I was never crazy about it.

Frankly, there isn't a dynamic mic I've found that I really like for VO. In my own personal experience, of course. And I've tried the SM-7, RE-20, Senn e935, and a Senn MD-441. They are all just too colored for my taste.

I bought a PR-40 and used it for a while. From what I'd heard, it either suited your voice, or it didn't... I was one of those that wasn't too happy with it... there seemed to be an upper-mid "raspiness" to it that made it a little harsh for me. After selling it, I settled down to an array of lower-end LDC mics, until I decided to try a dynamic again... this time with the SM7B. I'm a lot happier with the Shure for narration work... it doesn't seem to have any of the rough edge that the PR-40 had.

Again, this is a very subjective view... if there's any way you can get one with a good return policy, or taste and try before you buy, I'd definitely say it's worth looking at... it may suit you perfectly. Be aware that it needs a fair amount of gain, so your pre-amp could be critical. I was using a very clean Rane MS-1.

Cheers
Peter
