i've been looking at replacing my wireless mics - and in my research i found this:
700MHz wireless illegal
long story short the 700MHz band is now reserved for public safety
now, it appears this is the law of the land - BUT - does anybody know how it's working in practice? _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

I'm no Mike, no one is...
But I happen to have a Sennheiser wireless in the 700Mhz band and it worked perfectly when I used it to cover the Don LaFontaine Poker Classic last month. Yes, you can be fined by the FCC for using it. I took my chances... I am sure you are considering it because you are finding some very good deals on 700Mhz gear.

yeah - SUPER good! but ...
i don't want to turn it on at an event and find it's now a police scanner!
i'm sure it's just a matter of time before municipalities upgrade to new systems in the 700MHz range, and until then it's all good, but i guess i'd just as well spend what little expendable income i have on something that's not going to land me in the pokey sooner or later! _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Yep. It's true. A couple of my friends on the broadcast side of things have been discussing it, as well. They've relied on them for remote appearances, festival events, and concerts. They're phasing them out, too, since a violation could cost them their licenses.
And they are showing up on ebay and Craigslist. Buyer beware. I'd pass. _________________ Don Brookshire

Can these mics be retuned to a different frequency? _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

They operate on frequency bands, so you can only tune so far up or down.
I've had my 700 mhz unit for over 5 years. Now that it's worthless in the US, I am going to keep it for the rare occasion when I need one. Or I could sell it overseas, I suppose. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

i only use a wireless about 3 times a year - so i was THINKING about risking it - but ultimately decided against it. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Depends on the unit. Some manufacturers are able to change receivers and put you on a new band, while some units do not presently have that capability.
I'm still permitted to use stuff in the 700MHz range, but only due to background and having sought and gained approval to do so (ARES, MARS, in addition to other radio training related to job).
God help you if a Ham operator finds out that you're using one... those guys make folks like me look tame when it comes to hunting someone down. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Hah, a MARTI...
I was still hauling one of those around for IFB to our parabolic mic operators at the Eagles games back in 2003!
We were supposed to have to tuned down to 1 Watt, but I am pretty sure it was putting out 10 Watts. The frequency coordinators would occasionally bust our balls about that thing.
FYI, I have some SWEET Vega stuff in the 500-600 Mhz band with body packs I want to off-load. They are not frequency agile, but if you tell me what city you want to use them in I can help you find the one with the best fit. There are databases that list all of the UHF transmitters in a given area.
I bought a 6 pack of systems with antenna combiner when I was still production sound mixing, but just started to get out of that business and never once had to use them. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
