I went on a canoe trip down the Colorado River from Hoover Dam a few years ago and they beat it into our heads not to put our heads under the water in the hot spring pools because of the amoebas.

I just never understood why the amoebas just didn't find another orifice in which to invade the blood stream, but apparently they only like the mucous membranes or something.

I heard about this neti pot thing. Blew my mind! (pun not intended!)

But I picked up an extremely contagious parasite when I was training for a triathlon by swimming in Lake Michigan. Meds for is were $298 for a 3 day course. And an extremely embarrassing phone call at my office from the Cook County Health Department asking me all sorts of very personal hygiene and lifestyle questions. Made me feel like a dirty girl from Seinfeld.
