i know this has been discussed previously but i admit, i wasn't paying attention.

i've got a rode nt1-a (blech.) that i'm considering having modified by michael joly. i tried the same mod at gp's with f2 in the studio and it sounded pretty flippin fab. (was that an nt1 or a 1-a -- do you remember, guys? does it matter??)

$399. (gulp.)

yes? no? i know mmmv, but how's YOUR mileage, if this applies to you and your mod?

thanks in advance!

No personal experience, but keep in mind, for the price of the mod you could get some pretty decent mics. That said, the NT1-a isn't as bad as some people want it to be.

I had Michael mod an old NT1A that I had knocking around. It certainly tamed the brightness and made it far more useful on female voices. Super low noise too. Can't say it's my go-to mic these days, but I'm a bit spoilt in that department.

I've actually lent it out at the moment but if it comes back next week then I'll try and do some soundfiles so you could hear it next to a vintage U87.

Doesn't Michael claim it to sound better than a vintage U87?? Smile

Diane, I have three of Mike Joly's modded NT1-a's and I love them. I keep on on campus for eLearning reads during the day and two at home for various projects.

His attention to detail is amazing and he stands behind his product. I have a U87a as well, I use them both depending on the studio. Home, u87, campus, NT1a...

He has audio samples on his website, but if you want to try one, I can loan you one to play with.

I don't think he'd claim that directly.
