Hey all - new member here based in Chicago! I've only recently transitioned from student to student/represented talent, and could use all the advice I can get. My starry-eyed dream is voicing video games (haven't heard that before, huh?), but Chicago is primarily a commercial hub, and all of the gaming work seems to be in LA. What to do, what to do?
I'm interested in going to GDC in SF for the first time this March on an Audio pass (budget!) and I'm wondering how to make the most of the experience. Would anyone please share their thoughts on GDC and what sessions/events are must-see? I hear the parties are super for networking. Would it be wise to bring any demo CDs (just in case), or at least a big stack of business cards? Thanks so much!

I can't speak to the worth of the GDC having never been, but I'm doing quite a bit of video game voice work and so far none of it's been in LA either. I've had clients in Seattle, Vancouver, Toronto, Boston and on and on. Sometimes I go to their studios but most often I do it from mine. They're everywhere.
Get a competitive demo together, track down the producers from huge to small, and invite them to listen. When your ability meets their needs, they should bite.

I've been attending the GDC since 2006 and it is the best thing I've ever done for my career.
They don't have a ton of stuff for VO's, but there's more every year, and getting to know the audio guys is wicked fabulous. I've gotten tons more work thru GDC pals than thru any agent. Plus the more you learn, the more fun it is to work with AND PLAY video games!
The more you know, the bigger an asset you are to any dialogue or audio director.
I'll be speaking again this year—giving as clinic of sorts about high-energy exertion sounds. I hope you can make it! _________________ DBCooperVO.com
