Over the course of the past few weeks I have been looking at different microphones and what to do about making them sound the way I want the mic to sound.

As a part of this exercise I think it wise to let you know I am working on building a TRUE Voiceover-ist mic. One TUNED for VO, with little sibilance, open and clean representation of the human voice without needing EQ or processing. My vision includes a solid (exotic) wood body and shock-mount with a Neuman style headbasket and (just for fun) an LED light inside the headbasket). This is a one-off and built for me, by me, and not for anyone else. The mic will not be for sale.

Pictures will follow as I create the body from wood available.

I have realized that there is certain criteria I prefer for a mic, what are yours? What makes for a good microphone for your voice and VO specifically?

Be sure you check with a luthier before selecting the wood you use. They favor woods like sitka spruce, western red cedar, rosewood, mahogany, ebony, maple, etc. because they do such a good job of transmitting sound. For a microphone body, you'll probably want one that has exactly the opposite acoustic properties.

Soft, pillowy esses for sure.

Detail, detail and more detail.

A certain amount of mojo in the lower mids, but otherwise natural - as in OMG is that a recording?

And huge.

Oh - hang on - it's a vintage U87!

Good luck Frank. Sounds like fun. Can't wait to see and hear it.

I know you are working on a mod for the V69 too. Anything new beyond the tube change out?
