Quite a few sites are offline today and Google's logo is blacked out in protest of legislation that is currently moving through the US Sentae and House of Representatives.

Our cardinal rule here is NO POLITICAL ANYTHING.

On the other hand, these are laws that may affect our livelihood because of how we promote our work on the intarwebz.

If you want to talk about it here— have at it.
Let's keep it civil.

Sites offline today include
Wikipedia

Reddit

BoingBoing

Craigslist

Here is Reddit's look at the laws and how they could affect use of content on the net.

I think the Obama administration may have the best take on this, and that is that no one wants their artistic creation pirated, but the draconian measures provided in these current pieces of legislation will hurt us (and our content providers) so much more than need be. There is an acceptable line (compromise) somewhere between our freedom to do what we want, and measures taken to protect us from harm by others. These current measures seem to go too far.

The websites noted above would like us to burn up some phone lines in Washington in hopes Congress will listen and find the right path. ::derisive laugh mp3::

If you have an opinion you'd like to share with your Congress member, Wikipedia will provide you with their phone number.

Actually, all that is up on Wikipedia is a way to contact your elected officials.

I stand corrected. I took advantage of your timely message yesterday to contact Oregon's elected officials. I went to Wikipedia today to see how they were handling it and only saw their 'Dark' message. It was my lack of observation that failed to note the 'zip code contact your representative box'

I've been known to do the same with other directives. 'Read it all, Rick... read it all"

My question is: Have the politicians involved asked their children, or their children's children what they think about the law? They're the ones who will be affected by this.

Yonie, ya gotta be kiddin' me. Those politicians don't even listen to the adults they serve.... just lobbyists and corporate contributors. Congress hasn't seriously tried to serve the people (or their children) for many decades now.
